Children's MMO

Children's MMOs (or kids' MMOs) are massively multiplayer online games designed specifically for children. They are typically characterized by cartoonish graphics, menu-based chat, filtered free-form text chat, and employ minigames.

History

1990s

Children's MMOs have existed for decades, the first one being Castle Infinity, released in 1996 by Starwave.

2000s

This decade was a notable time for child-oriented MMOs, as several well-known games in the genre have been released during that time, those games have also introduced staples to the genre that remain today.

2003 saw the release of Toontown Online. Notably the first kids MMO to feature menu-based chat "SpeedChat", which would become a standard in the genre.[1]

In 2005, Webkinz and Club Penguin were launched.

2010s

2010 saw the release of Animal Jam Classic (formerly Animal Jam), an online educational game that saw popularity for the rest of the decade.

2020s
