Career

Tan began his career in 1995 at Keppel Corporation’s treasury division, where he traded Asian equities and fixed-income instruments. From 1999 to 2001, he managed the proprietary credit portfolio at DBS Bank. He later served as Managing Director at Amaranth Advisors.[1] He subsequently joined Apollo Global Management and established its Asian operations as founding partner.[2] In 2013, Tan received the Distinguished Financial Industry Certified Professional Award.[3] In January 2016, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer for Asia-Pacific at Trafigura.[4] He stepped down from this role in September 2023, marking the conclusion of his private-sector executive career.[5]

Public Sector and Advisory Roles

In 2020, Tan was appointed to the Emerging Stronger Taskforce under Singapore’s Future Economy Council. He co-led the Alliances for Action on Supply Chain Digitalisation and EduTech and participated in the Sustainability working group.[6]

In 2021, Tan became Chairman of SGTraDex, Singapore’s national digital trade infrastructure initiative.[7] In 2023, he was appointed Chairman of the Energy Supply Resilience Advisory Panel under the Energy Market Authority. He also serves on the board of JTC Corporation and chairs its Finance and Investment Committee.[8] He is an independent director of Singapore Press Holdings.

Academic and Professional Affiliations

Tan previously served as President of CFA Society Singapore.[9] In 2024, he was named a Donaldson Fellow at the Yale School of Management.[10] He also serves as Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Bahrain in Singapore.[11]

Community Involvement

Tan is active in education-focused philanthropy and community initiatives. He founded the Premmies Fund at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in 2009 to support families of premature infants.[12]

Tan is active in social and community initiatives, particularly in education.[13] He sits on NTU’s Board of Trustees and advisory panels for youth and volunteer programs. He has supported initiatives such as the NTU Priorities Fund, Lien Aid Limited, and the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital endowment fund. Tan helped establish the Premmies Fund for parents of premature babies and has worked with ComChest and NCSS on donor engagement programs.

Tan has authored three books: •⁠⁠Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities (2014), co-authored with Thomas R. Robinson.[14] •⁠⁠Values at the Core (2020), co-authored with Thomas Grandjean, listed among Financial Times readers’ Best Summer Books in 2021.[15] •⁠⁠Economic Success: Fate or Destiny (2024), co-authored with Thomas Grandjean, discussing global economic trends and Asia’s strategic role.[16]
