China Marie Hendren-O'Neal (born July 22, 1991) known professionally as China Marie is an American singer & songwriter from Portland, Oregon. Her musical inspiration comes from artists like Jill Scott and Anita Baker.[1] Her discography includes collaborations with Jake&Papa, Too Short, Ray J and record-producing super group Bankroll Got It. She is co-founder of Culture Fusion Agency. [2] [3]
Early life
China's inspiration for music began as a child when she would sing along to neo-soul & R&B records that her mother would play at home. At age thirteen she began singing and songwriting as a hobby. This was a way for her to release the grief she felt after her grandmothers’ passing.
After a brief stint in college she decided to take the next step in her career and make one of the biggest moves in her life. She bought a one-way ticket from Portland to Los Angeles, California. After landing a job at Larrabee Sound Studios, where she witnessed Bruno Mars, James Fauntleroy, 1500 or Nothin' and others record, she got first-hand experience of what the music industry had to offer.[4]
Soon after she was approached and mentored by legendary rap artist Too Short, where she began preparations for what would be her debut album.[5]
Career
China Marie officially launched a musical career in 2017 when she completed her debut album POTPOURRI and secured distribution through RBC Records and BMG Rights Management.[6] The album had features from Jake&Papa [7] [8] Ray J & Too Short. [9] [10] She licensed "Is It Possible" on Rebel (2017 TV series).
Following the success of her release she moved from Los Angeles to New York to gain some East Coast exposure. She made numerous appearances in the radio circuit with iheartradio & The Breakfast Club.[11] [12]. She also became a resident performer at the Barclays Center.
In 2018, Unearthed Underground leaked her single "What is you doin?" featuring Columbia Records artist Symba.[13]
Following up with the success she attained with the pop/rap crossover she collaborated with Org Prophecy on "Y.K.T.V".[14] [15]
In 2020, China partnered with Ghazi Shami CEO of Empire Distribution to help the youth with viable opportunities and tools to market themselves and thrive in the music industry.[16]
China Marie currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where she continues working with youth through her company.
