Chinatown-International District Block Party (also known as the CID Block Party[1]) is a free, daylong pan-Asian American block party held each August in historic Chinatown-International District neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, United States. The lineups feature musical artists across the Asian diaspora.[2]
Past performers include: Awkwafina.[3], Shawn Wasabi[3], Chong the Nomad, Prometheus Brown (MC of Blue Scholars), CHYL[4], and Tomo Nakayama[3]
The main events of the block party are located under i-5 freeway in the InterImCDA[5] parking lot on S King St between 8th Ave S and 10th Ave S between Chinatown and Little Saigon neighborhoods.
The event is fiscally sponsored by Seattle Chinatown-International District Preservation Development Authority (also known as SCIDpda). The event is funded by grants from the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and Historic South Downtown, sponsorships from local businesses, and volunteers. In addition, CID Block Party collaborates with other community organizations in the CID neighborhood, such as Friends of Little Saigon, Chinatown-International District Business Improvement Association (CIDBIA), and Seattle Asian American Film Festival (SAAFF).
History[edit]
The event was organized by an organizing coalition called API Food Fight Club[6][7]. The founding members are: Tuyen Than[7], Jintana Lityouvong[7], Sonny Nguyen[7], and Ryan Catabay[7]. In 2016, there were only 300 attendees, and less than 10 vendor booths. The event was put on hiatus from 2017 to 2018. Tuyen and Ryan co-launched their creative studio based in historic Japantown in Seattle's Chinatown-ID, called Drag & Drop Creative[8]. Sonny started a new position as CID Public Safety Coordinator[9] serving as a liaison with the City of Seattle and Chinatown-International District. Jintana continued working at the Wing Luke Museum. Due to the success of the film Crazy Rich Asians and an increased demand for more Asian American representation, Tuyen revived the CID Block Party along with Ryan, and Jintana. In 2019, the event grew with almost 4,000 attendees and over 20 marketplace vendors. The event was again put on hiatus from 2020 to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic. The event returned for its inaugural debut August 20, 2022[7].
