Chinazo Okeke

Chinazo Okeke (born 1st August 2002) is a British indoor rowing world record holder.[1][2][3][4]. Chinazo currently holds the RP3 indoor rowing world records in four events, including the 100m, 500m, 1000m, and 1 minute[1][2][3][4]
Early Life
Chinazo Okeke was born in Bakhmut, Ukraine (formerly known as Artemivsk) in the Donetsk region, on Thursday, 1st August 2002..[4]. She attended St Wilfrid's Catholic School and graduated with eight grades of 9s in her GCSEs[5]. She then went on to secure a place to study Medicine at Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge[4][6]. During her time at school, Chinazo was also involved in scientific research and worked with another student to produce a plastic alternative that was biodegradable to help address the issue of plastic pollution[7].
Rowing Career
Chinazo began rowing in 2022 after sustaining a knee injury while doing a medical research internship at the Koehler Lab.[8] associated with the Boston Children's Hospital in the United States[4][9]. Chinazo used to be a cross-country and track runner[10]. While practicing her running, she sustained a knee injury which left her unable to train[3][4]. She then began indoor rowing as a form of rehab for her knee and from here took it up as a sport[3][4]. She soon began training with Cambridge University Boat Club in 2023[4][11][12]. In 2024, Chinazo began breaking RP3 World-Records and she now holds the overall records in the 500m, 1000m, and 1 minute categories and the U23 records in the 100m category[1][3][4]. In 2024, Chinazo has also competed in the World Indoor Rowing Championships (WRICH)[13] which is an annual event organised by World Rowing and presented by Concept 2[14].
Other
Chinazo is a medical student at the University of Cambridge[6] and is a published first-author with an article on the peri-operative management of adults with traumatic brain injury[15]
