Chiu Yeh Huang (Chinese: 黃秋月, 1933–2018) was born on September 23, 1933, in Tainan, Taiwan. [1] She received a Bachelor of Architecture from the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan in 1956 and a Master of Engineering in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo in Japan in 1968.

She was the first female chair for the Department of Urban Planning[2] in her undergraduate alma mater. She also served as the first president for the National Tainan Girl’s Senior High School Alumni Association[3] and second president for the Tainan Branch of Zonta International[4]

Professional work

During the 1960s–1970s, Huang’s research focused on urban planning. Huang was asked to design churches for the Christian community, such as the Tainan Holiness Church (1966)[5][6] and the True Jesus Church–Kaiyuan Church (1976)[7]. Her design represented the Christian principles of belief and appreciation. When the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act was enacted by the Presidential Order in Taiwan in 1982, Huang started to participate in the conservation of historic buildings. Since 1993, she renovated Taiwan Fu Cheng-huang Temple (1993–1995), Six Piles of Great Queen of Heaven Temple (1993–1995), Tainan Kai-yuan Temple (1993–1997), Dueiyue Gate (1993–2008), the Great South Gate (1996–2001), Wanchin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (1996–2002), Tainan Taingong Temple (2004), Hai San Hall (2005–2009), and Zhong Gan Temple (2007–2010). These edifices were originally built over a century ago and serve to preserve the history of the city and society during that epoch.

Huang spearheaded her own team of architects, who researched the traditional craft of historic temples and churches in the central and southern regions of Taiwan. She also educated countless pupils at the National Cheng-Kung University in architecture, urban planning, and historical restoration. As an accomplished architect and educator, Huang served as the epitome of a maverick in the architectural community.

Huang died on July 14, 2018, at the age of 84, in Tainan, Taiwan.
