The Chocolate Bhutlah is an interspecific hybrid chili pepper from the capsicum chinense plant. The unripe peppers are green, while fully matured, ripe ones are a chocolate brown color.[1] They have an elongated shape and wrinkled skins. It's a hybrid between a Bhut jolokia pepper and a 7 Pot Douglah, hence the name "Chocolate Bhutlah". It's known for its intense heat and earthy taste.[1]

Taste[edit]

Its earthy taste can be compared with that of the chocolate habanero pepper.[1]

Usage[edit]

These peppers are used primarily for hot sauces, though they're also used for adding heat to soups, salsas and stews. One pepper company called the PuckerButt Pepper Company made their own hot sauce out of it to play off its earthiness. The sauce is made from a Chocolate Bhutlah and vinegar.[1]

Scoville rating[edit]

A few years ago, the Carolina Reaper pepper was the hottest pepper in the world, though this pepper beat that now in terms of pungency. While it's known for its extreme heat, it's less spicy than the Komodo Dragon and Dragon's Breath peppers.[1] In terms of world records, stability is a key factor so it's likely generations away from officially being at a top spot.

Reactions[edit]

In 2013, a competitive eater named Kevin Strahle ate two entire Chocolate Bhutlahs. He went as far as dumping milk on his head and shooting a fire extinguisher at his face to calm the pain.[2]
