"Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai" (English: "What is hidden behind the blouse?") is a Hindi song from the Indian thriller film Khalnayak (1993). The song was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun, picturised on Madhuri Dixit. The song created much controversy upon its release because of its sensuality and racy lyrics. In 2013, it was selected as the hottest song in Bollywood history in a poll conducted by BBC.[1]

The song helped the Khalnayak soundtrack album sell 10 million copies, making it one of the year's best-selling Bollywood soundtrack albums, along with Baazigar.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Controversy[edit]

The song is often criticised for its sensual lyrics. In the song, actress Neena Gupta asks the actress Madhuri, "What's under your blouse?". She replies by saying that her heart is there. Lyricist Anand Bakshi was much criticised for writing vulgar and dual meaning stanzas. He,along with actress Madhuri, composer L-P, singer Alka Yagnik, was criticised. However, choreographer Saroj Khan was praised for her amazing choreography. All of them earned a nomination at that year's Filmfare Awards, while Alka Yagnik and Saroj Khan bagged awards.[1] It was declared vulgar and banned from being played at Doordarshan and All India Radio. Analyst Monika Mehta wrote in her review, “the visual and verbal representation combined to produce female sexual desire. It was the articulation of this desire that was the problem—it posited that women were not only sexual objects, but also sexual subjects.” Some others supported the song.[8]

Influence[edit]

London-based Indian choreographer and Just Dance season 1's finalist Karan Pangali labeled the song as his favourite and he choreographed it as well.[1]
