From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Chopra Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization[1] co-founded by Deepak Chopra in 1999.[2][3] Based in Carlsbad, California, the stated mission of the Chopra Foundation is to advance the cause of mind/body spiritual healing, education, and research through fund raising for selected projects.[4][5]

Activities[edit]

The Chopra Foundation directs and participates in various charity or nonprofit events in line with its mission statement[6]:

The Chopra Foundation’s Mission is to participate with individuals and organizations in creating a critical mass for a peaceful, just, sustainable, and healthy world through scientifically and experientially exploring non-dual consciousness as the ground of existence and applying this understanding in the enhancement of health, business, leadership and conflict resolution.

Sages and Scientists[edit]

An annual event that takes place at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa,[7] the Sages and Scientists Symposium is a conference held by the Chopra Foundation that seeks to bring together experts in science, business, healthcare, and the humanities to analyze consciousness and the issues that affect social, scientific and spiritual development.[8] Prominent speakers at the symposium have included Keith Black, Menas Kafatos, Kyra Phillips, Leonard Mlodinow, Rudolph E. Tanzi, Efren Peñaflorida, Stuart Hameroff, and Thomas R. Insel.[9]

Self-Directed Biological Transformation Initiative[edit]

A program begun to examine mind-body epigenetic connections, SBTI includes the controversial idea that individual behavior can affect a subject's genetic sequence. Participating researchers, institutions and organizations include Rudolph E. Tanzi, Joseph P. Kennedy, Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Rose F. Kennedy, Director of Genetics and Aging Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Deepak Chopra.[10]

Weightless Project[edit]

The Chopra Foundation is partnered with the Weighless Project[11], a fundraising program that seeks to address both obesity and starvation.[12] The charity, which raises money for food relief programs in correlation to the weight lost by participants, was founded by Kartik Iyer, Praveen Das, and Poonacha Machaiah.[13]

Peace is a Lifestyle[edit]

The Chopra Foundation partners with Peace is a Lifestyle, a youth violence-prevention organization.[14] The charity focuses on educating at-risk youths in media awareness, community participation and self-esteem.[15]

The Future of Wellbeing[edit]

This touring event involves Deepak Chopra presenting speeches on his views about consciousness and healing.[16] The events take place around the world in a large number of countries.[17]

Financials[edit]

The Chopra Foundation's Form 990 indicates that in 2011 the organization had an income of $813,480 and spent $575,209, with 97.7% of expenses going toward the foundation's program services.[18] The Chopra Foundation is registered under NTEE as B90, which encompasses educational institutions and services.[19]

Legal Actions[edit]

In 2013 Deepak Chopra sued former Chopra Foundation associate Jim Walsh on the grounds that Walsh misappropriated funds intended for a consciousness study, was operating a business without a license and misrepresented his relationship to the Chopra Foundation. Chopra sought to recoup $150,000 Walsh allegedly redirected to his own purposes.[20]
