Professor Christopher John Atkin (born 16 December 1964) [1] is a British aeronautical engineer, and Head of Engineering at the University of East Anglia (UEA), and Chairman of the Engineering Council (EngC).
Early life[edit]
He attended the independent Stonyhurst College in Lancashire from 1977-82.[2]
He studied Engineering at St John's College, Cambridge, where he took part in rowing, as a coach. He was one of the coaches for the Cambridge University Women's Boat Club (CUWBC).
At Cambridge he gained a BA in 1986 (MA in 1990). He gained a PhD in Transonic Aerodynamics in 1991. He was at Cambridge for eight years.
Career[edit]
British Aerospace[edit]
He first worked for British Aerospace Commercial Aircraft in Hertfordshire, moving to Cheshire in 1992 when the Hertfordshire site was closed.
Defence Research Agency[edit]
In 1994 he moved to the Defence Research Agency (DERA) in north-east Hampshire.
City University[edit]
He became Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at City University in London, later Head of the department. Whilst at City University he was President of the RAeS from 12 May 2016.
He has been Chairman of the Engineering Council since 2017.
UEA[edit]
In January 2020 he became Head of Engineering at UEA in Norfolk.
Personal life[edit]
He became a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2002, and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in September 2018.
