Chris Ingmar von Christierson (born 1947) is a South African mining entrepreneur[1][2], and philanthropist.[3] He is an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge (2015).[4]

Early life and education

Von Christierson was born in Durban, South Africa. After graduating from Rhodes University[5], he later studied economics at Magdalene College Cambridge University, graduating in 1963.[6] He is married to Marina Panitza-Yablansky[7], with whom he has three children.

Business career

After leaving Cambridge, von Christierson worked in the mining sector and was a director of various listed mining companies. He was the founder and chairman of Rio Narcea Gold Mines Ltd[8], which listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. [9] Rio Narcea brought into production a gold mine in northern Spain[10], the Agua Blanca nickel mine in southern Spain, and the Tassiast gold mine in Mauritania.[11] He was also a non-executive director of Gold Fields Ltd (2000-12). [12][13]

Chris von Christierson is currently director at Southern Prospecting[14], a seed investor in Cornish Lithium[15][16], a venture in Cornwall to mine lithium, and is one of the founders of Kabanga Nickel[1], a mining project in Tanzania. He is a seed investor in Lifezone Metals[2], listed in the NYSE (July 2023)[17], which has developed hydrometallurgical technologies to extract metals at lower costs, with smaller carbon impact and using in-country processing. [18]

Non-profit activities

In 2006, von Christierson established the Watch Hill Foundation, a UK-registered charity, of which he is the chairman. He is a Trustee of the Bitou Community Foundation Trust[19], also registered in the UK.

Education

In 1995 von Christierson, in collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and Magdalene College, was the founding benefactor of the Mandela Magdalene Scholarships to Cambridge University.[20], [21] Some 50 scholarships have been awarded to date to African graduates to study for an MPhil. Von Christierson currently sits on the American University of Bulgaria Council.[22]

Art

Von Christierson began collecting contemporary Afro-Cuban art in 2007. His collection is currently owned by Without Masks-The Watch Hill Foundation.[23] In 2022, paintings from this collection by the Cuban artist Belkis Ayón were exhibited at La Biennale Arte in Venice in 2022.[24]

Environment

In 2010, von Christierson became the founding chairman of the Robberg Coastal Corridor Protected Environment[25] in South Africa's Western Cape province.
