Christian-Peter Hanelt (born 1964) is a German political scientist and journalist. He is a senior expert for Europe, Neighbourhood and the Middle East at Bertelsmann Stiftung..[1]
Early life
Christian-Peter Hanelt grew up in Lübeck. After his high school graduation and subsequent military service, he obtained a magister degree in political science from the University of Kiel in 1990. During his studies he took an Arabic language course in Damascus and specialised in the politics of the Near and Middle East.
Career
Hanelt interned at ZDF's foreign new department under the direction of Ulrich Kienzle, where he reported on the Second Gulf War (1991). From 1991 to 1994, he worked as a foreign editor and reporter for Sat 1,[2] during which time he interviewed numerous heads of state and important personalities of the Arab world.[3] He also reported on the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks within the framework of the Oslo process.
In 1994, Hanelt became a consultant at the Bertelsmann Stiftung and since then has led, among other things, the Kronberg Talks,[4] a dialogue format for foreign policy experts and high-ranking politicians from Europe and the states of the MENA region[5]. In 2005, Hanelt was seconded to the Ministry's planning staff as part of a cooperation between the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the German Foreign Ministry. Hanelt is also a member of Candid Foundation's advisory board.[6]
Hanelt is a frequent contributor to German language media outlets on topics related to the Middle East, such as Deutsche Welle,[7] Tagesschau,[8] Qantara,[9], phoenix,[10], zenith magazine,[11] Deutschlandfunk,[12] and SWR.[13]
