Christian Hubicki is an American robotics professor and reality television personality best known for competing on the CBS reality competition series Survivor. He first appeared on Survivor: David vs. Goliath in 2018, where he finished in seventh place, and later returned for Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans.[1][2]
Early life and education
Hubicki grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and was living in Tallahassee, Florida, when he first competed on Survivor: David vs. Goliath. He completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering at Bucknell University, with minors in physics and music, and later earned a dual-degree Ph.D. in robotics and mechanical engineering from Oregon State University in 2015.[3][4] He completed postdoctoral work at the Georgia Institute of Technology before joining the faculty at Florida State University.[citation needed]
Academic career
Hubicki is a robotics professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, where his research focuses on legged robotics, optimal control, and biomechanics. He directs the Optimal Robotics Laboratory and works on the control of robots designed to move with animal-like speed, stability, and maneuverability.[5] Florida State University described his academic path as moving from a long-standing ambition to become a robotics professor into a public-facing role that also included his appearances on Survivor.[citation needed]
The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference described Hubicki as a roboticist and assistant professor whose research includes legged robotics, optimal control, and biomechanics. The same profile listed honors including the Gilbreth Lectureship from the National Academy of Engineering, a best paper award from IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine, and a Young Faculty Researcher grant from the Toyota Research Institute.[citation needed]
Media appearances and public speaking
Hubicki has spoken publicly about robotics, science communication, and Survivor. His robotics work has been featured in outlets including the Science Channel and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In 2021, he appeared as a speaker at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference for a Survivor analytics panel.[citation needed]
In 2025, CBS News reported that Hubicki made a brief cameo appearance in season three of The White Lotus, a series created by his former Survivor castmate Mike White.[6] CBS News reported that Hubicki appeared as a guest at the White Lotus resort in Thailand in a non-speaking background role.[citation needed]
Survivor career
Survivor: David vs. Goliath
Hubicki first competed on Survivor: David vs. Goliath, the 37th season of the American Survivor series, which aired in 2018. In pre-season coverage, Entertainment Weekly listed him as a 32-year-old robotics scientist from Baltimore who was living in Tallahassee, Florida.[citation needed]
Hubicki was placed on the David tribe. He became one of the season’s prominent characters and strategic players, and Entertainment Weekly described him after his elimination as one of the most popular Survivor players in years.[7] During the season, he became a frequent target after other players viewed him as a social, strategic, and challenge threat. He was voted out in seventh place and became a member of the jury.[citation needed]
One of Hubicki’s best-known moments from the season was an endurance immunity challenge in which he remained in the challenge for several hours and spoke extensively with host Jeff Probst. CBS later referenced the moment in promotional material for his return.[8]
Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans
Hubicki returned for Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans, a milestone season featuring returning contestants from across the history of the series.[9][10] Before the season, Entertainment Weekly reported that Hubicki planned to use a strategy he called narrative warfare and that he opposed pregame alliances despite recognizing their role in all-returnee seasons.[citation needed]
People reported that Hubicki became a father shortly before filming for Survivor 50 and planned to keep that information private from other contestants while using it as personal motivation. Parade also reported that Hubicki spoke with his wife, Emily, before filming and that his son had been born shortly before the season began filming.[11]
During Survivor 50, Hubicki worked with players including Rick Devens and Emily Flippen. Entertainment Weekly reported that he made several major moves during the season, including helping create a fake idol plan at Tribal Council, blindsiding his former David vs. Goliath castmate Mike White, and loaning his Shot in the Dark to Ozzy Lusth. In a mid-season interview, Hubicki discussed the Mike White vote and the effect it had on their relationship.[12]
Hubicki was eliminated after a Jimmy Fallon-themed Journey twist required him to write down his own name at Tribal Council.[13] Entertainment Weekly described him as the latest jury member after his elimination, and Parade described him as the fourteenth person voted out and fourth member of the jury.[citation needed]
