Education

He attended Port Jefferson High School and graduated in 1987. Hand attended State University of New York at Purchase (Purchase State College). While there, Hand was instrumental in revamping its college radio station, WPUR (now WPSR). Hand graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts concentrating in English Literature.

Early Career

Upon graduation from Purchase State University, Hand was offered a job to tour with P.M. Dawn as part of the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) Festival with Peter Gabriel headlining. His official title was drum technician although he was originally hired as a lighting tech.

Started work with British hip-hop Label, Gee Street Records, as an A&R (artists & repertoire) assistant. In 1993, he went on to become the stage manager for The Gravediggaz while they toured together with Public Enemy, Gang Starr, Ice Cube and others. Given the moniker of MC Skullcap, he performed with The Gravediggaz in place of RZA on part of their European tour.

Having known Fred Jenkins for years, Hand was offered the assistant manager/talent booker for 7 Willow Street, a club in Port Chester, NY after he left Gee Street Records. He was responsible for bringing in acts Face to Face, Goo Goo Dolls, The Bogmen, and Soul Coughing, to name a few.

Radio Career

7 Willow Street was used as a venue by modern rock radio station X107 (WRGX) out of Westchester, NY. Hand saw an opportunity to work there and was on-air during the overnight DJ slot using the name “Chase.” Being promoted to afternoon drive after a few months, Hand began to work with Mike Savage on groundbreaking electronica show, “X107 Hardhouse.” When the WRGX changed format in 1996 to country, Hand transferred across the country to sister station Y107 (KLYY) in Los Angeles.

On Southern California’s Modern Rock Y107, Hand, still known as “Chase”, was again on-air doing the nighttime shift.[1]. Hand continued to push the radio scene with show segments "Spandex Nation", "Locals Only", "The Menage-A-Ska", "The People's Choice", "The 9 O'Clock News", "Valley Of The Lost 80's", and the hour long electronica show "Y107 Liphted" which featured such artists as Friction & Spice, U-Ziq, The Crystal Method, Swedish Egil, Gearwhore, Christopher Lawrence, and many others performing live on air.

In 2007, Hand joined Sirius XM “Faction”[6] channel as the overnight DJ from 7:00pm – 2:00am. He would also contribute to the Jason Ellis Show on occasion. Along with Jason Ellis and other show host Michael Tully and Josh “Rawdog” Richmond, founded the band Taintstick. Taintstick released one album, Six Pounds of Sound after being signed by Suburban Noize Records. They broke up in 2010 only to reform as a new band, Death! Death! Die! During this time, Hand and Ellis came up with the”Naked Vocals” segment, where only the vocal parts to a classic rock song are heard. After a falling out of sorts between Ellis and Hand, it would lead to Hand’s dismissal from Sirius XM in September 2014.

KSWD 100.3 The Sound

On March 26, 2015, Christian became a guest on the Mark in the Morning show on KSWD 100.3 The Sound[7]. He introduced the host and co-hosts to Marvin Gaye’s “Heard It Through the Grapevine” down to its individual tracks. During this time, Hand started to do live music breakdowns called The Sound Sessions at Swing House scheduled once a month.

On January 15, 2016, KSWD 100.3 The Sound, announced a new afternoon show, Andy in the Afternoon which would have Hand join host Andy Chanley weekdays from 3:00pm – 7:00pm.[8] Hand would also continue to make guest appearances on the morning show. Most notable was the morning of February 11th, in which Hand did his dissection of Toto’s Rosanna. It got national attention when it was picked up by Guitar World magazine’s website on March 6th[9]. On May 8th, Hand was given his own one hour show on 100.3 The Sound titled “If You Like That” that appeared Sunday nights at 9:00pm. The concept was to introduce listeners to new music by coupling it with a similar themed or sounding classic rock tune. August 2, saw the end of the Andy in the Afternoon show and the last If You Like That episode took place on August 5th. Hand then left the station.
