Christine Handy is an American model, author, motivational speaker and breast cancer survivor.[1][2][3][4][5] The St. Louis Magazine stated that “Handy began modeling...at age 11.”[6] Fashion Week Online stated that she is “a print model of 40 years.”[7]

Handy was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer on October 1, 2012. She experienced 28 rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. NBC-affiliate WKYC journalist Larry Macon, Jr. described Handy as a “modern-day survivor.”[8]

“I felt like a burden to those around me. I felt like my kids would have a better life, because I couldn’t take care of anybody, much less myself. My mind was not in the right place, and I really felt that killing myself was the right answer.”

—Handy in St. Louis Magazine September 16, 2016[9]

On August 27, 2016, Handy was interviewed on ABC affiliate WFAA News 8 in Dallas. During the interview, she briefly explained why she felt that her three major health challenges (near-death colon surgery in 2006, botched wrist surgery in 2011 and cancer diagnosis in 2012) was a “Job-like experience.”[10] (In the Bible book of Job, Job is presented as a godly, wealthy, family-man...who was suddenly struck with one tragedy after another. His children, health and wealth were taken away from him in very dramatic ways. And even though Job’s wife didn’t die during that satanic siege, her advice to him after those tragic events occurred wasn’t very supportive. She basically encouraged him to “curse God and die.” According to the first chapter of the Book of Job, all of it happened in order to test Job’s faith in God. At the end of the story, readers discover that Job remained faithful to God and was immensely blessed for doing so.[11])

Handy has been interviewed (radio, podcasts, social media and television) multiple times since recovering from her cancer ordeal in 2016.[12] The following are the call signs of the short-list of stations that broadcasted some of her most notable interviews, ones that were not already mentioned in this article: KEXB 620 AM,[13] KDFW FOX 4 NEWS,[14] KOGO NEWS RADIO 95.7 FM & 600 AM,[15] WOOD NEWS RADIO 106.9 FM & 1300 AM[16] and WREC NEWSTALK 92.1 FM & 600 AM.[17]

Handy was a guest on Gretchen Carlson’s Instagram The Lift Up show. (Carlson, Miss America 1989, was one of the 100 Most Influential People In The World in 2017, according to Time magazine.) The both of them discussed many topics, one of which was how a traumatic MRSA infection in Handy’s chest in 2020 unintentionally led to a corroborative creation with a swimsuit brand to design, manufacture and market a bikini top for flat-chested women.[18]

Handy’s grandfather Dr. Peter G. Danis was one of the best-known pediatricians in St. Louis. He, along with Leo Wieck, Frank J. Guyol, and the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, founded the Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital of St. Louis.[19][20] (From 1903 to 1946, John J. Glennon was the Archbishop of St. Louis. He became a cardinal in 1946. His influence greatly helped his mission come to fruition with the construction of the hospital that bears his name. It was built solely by funds donated from the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Glennon was a St. Louis “cardinal” who didn’t become famous for hitting the most “Hail Mary” home runs like Stan “The Man” Musial so often did, or pitching a rare “Immaculate Inning” like Bob “Gibby” Gibson once did. No, this “cardinal” became famous for doing his best to provide healthcare to “all children” living in his community.[21])

Handy is friends with socialite Christina Getty the youngest granddaughter of the late petroleum industrialist J. Paul Getty. Handy attended an exclusive trunk show on March 21, 2017 at the Miami Beach home of Getty. As stated in World Red Eye magazine, “a percentage of all sales made throughout the day benefitted the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind.”[22] (According to a statement made in Hello magazine, Christina Getty “rubs shoulders with the rich and famous.” Prince Frederic von Anhalt and his wife Zsa Zsa Gabor and Barbara Becker, the former wife of tennis great Boris Becker, were a few of the well-known guests who attended Getty’s lavish wedding to Arin Maercks in 2002.[23])

Early life[edit]

In an interview conducted (November 15, 2021) by Lee Habeeb and Montie Montgomery of Our American Stories, a radio show featuring stories that represent the best of America, Handy shared a few interesting facts about her early life. (Our American Stories are broadcast using various platforms, most notably is Premiere Networks, a subsidiary of iHeartMedia. With more than 7,000 radio affiliations, Premiere Networks reaches a quarter billion listeners every month.[24] Habeeb {Our American Stories} was ranked 12th in Talkers Magazine 2022 Heavy Hundred {100 Most Important Radio Talk Show Hosts in America}.[25] Ranked in the 30th and 14th position in 2020 and 2021, respectively, Habeeb has dramatically moved up the ladder during the three-year period.[26][27]) Handy’s story on Our American Stories re-aired on iHeart on May 25, 2022.[28]

The second oldest of Jacqueline (née Beger) and Timothy J. Danis’ four children, Handy was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 7, 1970. She was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Handy attended Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill Schools, a Sacred Heart School for boys and girls grades JK-6 and young women grades 7-12. She began modeling at 11 years of age, even though her parents were not in favor of her doing so. Some of the “modeling gigs” that Montgomery mentioned that she had were for well-known companies...Pepsi, Target, Petco and J.Crew.[29]

Handy struggled with an eating disorder during her teenage years. In her sophomore year at Southern Methodist University, she came to grips with her condition and admitted to her parents that she had a problem. They took her to the hospital to receive medical treatment. After a 30-day stay in the hospital, she no longer had an eating disorder. In 2011, Handy tore her ulnar carpal collateral ligament in her right wrist that required surgery. The surgery was botched and eventually left her in severe pain and with a fused arm. That medical malpractice incident is the reason why Handy’s right wrist is unable to function properly.[30]

Author and film producer[edit]

Handy’s 2016 novel Walk Beside Me is a fictionalized story of her breast cancer ordeal.[31] The book was published by Morgan James Publishing and released in 2016.[32] It was a national best-selling book in 2016.[33]

Sheena Colette will play the role of Willow

Walk Beside Me synopsis: Willow Adair, a woman who seemingly had it all...fame, fortune and family, suffers a series of serious physical setbacks that cause her picture-perfect lifestyle to crack and crumble right before her very own eyes. In her despair, she begins to contemplate suicide. However, God had another plan for her. He sent “angels (faith, family and friends) to rescue her...the only resource she could count on to save her from her downward spiral. If it weren’t for the emotional and spiritual support of those angels, she would’ve carried out her preconceived plan to end her life. Through it all, Willow discovers the “inner warrior” hidden inside of her heart, manifesting in an unmeasurable manner to help her conquer cancer and take back her life.[34]

Filmmaker Ziad Hamzeh is currently developing the film Willow based on Handy’s novel.[35] Actress Sheena Colette will play the role of the main character Willow Adair.[36] (In her most notable movie role, Irrefutable Proof, Colette played a scientist trying to refute the reality of God’s existence. For her amazing acting accomplishment, she received the 2016 Best Actress Award from the Beverly Hills Film Festival. Incidentally, it was stated in an article in the Hollywood Reporter that Ziad Hamzeh directed that film. Moreover, Irrefutable Proof won the 2016 Golden Palm Award for being the best film in all categories.[37]) It was stated in The Daily Campus, “Through the creation of her movie, Handy hopes to reach more people than ever with her message of perseverance and what true beauty and friendship really look like.”[38]

Handy is also a film producer, known for Every 9 Hours, Con Men Case Files and Father’s Day.

Fashion designer[edit]

Designer Valentina Shah, owner of Panarea Couture, partnered with Handy in April 2021 to create fashionable swimwear for flat-chested women. The swimwear is made with environmental-friendly Econyl.[39] The product line was scheduled to be available for sale in November of 2021, but the materials that are required to manufacture the products are currently in short supply due to the 2021 global supply chain crisis.

Philanthropy and activism[edit]

In an interview in Medium, the CEO of Sycamore Entertainment Group (Edward Sylvan) asked Handy what was her primary motivation for helping others. She replied and told him that she disciplines herself on a daily basis to serve people rather than pursuing material possessions. Handy firmly believes that “People matter not stuff.”[40]

According to a statement made in GlobeNewswire, Handy is on the board of directors of two non-profit organizations.

  • EBeauty is a wig exchange program that offers wigs to female cancer patients who cannot afford them.
  • People of Purpose mission is to change recidivism.[41]

Handy attended the annual FFANY Shoes On Sale Gala Fundraiser hosted by QVC at The Waldorf Astoria on October 25, 2016 in New York City. The charitable red carpet event was televised. Donated designer shoes are sold at half-off suggested retail prices. All but 20% of the proceeds are donated to breast cancer research and education.[42]

On October 10, 2018, Handy participated in a charitable event that benefitted the American Cancer Society. It was held at a COS BAR retailer in Dallas. (COS BAR is a luxury cosmetic company headquartered in Los Angeles.[43])
