Christoph Schweigert (born 7 October 1966 in Heidelberg, Germany) is a German mathematician and mathematical physicist. He is a full professor at the University of Hamburg, where he works in the Department of Algebra and Number Theory and the Center for Mathematical Physics. His research lies at the intersection of mathematics and theoretical physics, particularly in conformal field theory, representation theory, and higher structures in geometry.

Early life and education

Schweigert won the national German Federal Mathematics Competition in 1987. He studied mathematics and physics at Heidelberg University, earning a diploma in theoretical physics in 1992. He completed his PhD in 1995 at the University of Amsterdam in Amsterdam under the supervision of Robbert Dijkgraaf and Jürgen Fuchs, with a thesis titled *Galois and simple current symmetries in conformal field theory*[1].

Academic career

After his PhD, Schweigert conducted postdoctoral research at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France from 1995 to 1996, and at CERN in Switzerland from 1997 to 1998. In 1999, he became a senior assistant at the ETH Zurich. From 1999 to 2002, he served as *Maître de Conférences* at theUniversité Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), where he also completed his habilitation in 2000.

In 2002, he was appointed professor at **RWTH Aachen University**. Since 2003, he has held a full professorship at the **University of Hamburg**, where he is affiliated with the Department of Algebra and Number Theory and the Center for Mathematical Physics[2].

Research

Schweigert’s research focuses on the mathematical foundations of quantum field theory and string theory. Key areas include:

He has made significant contributions to the understanding of the mathematical structure of low-dimensional quantum field theories, including a complete construction of correlators of two-dimensional rational conformal field theories and the implementation of symmetries and dualities via defects.

Honours and awards

Editorial and professional roles

Schweigert has served as editor or co-editor for several leading journals in mathematical physics, including:

From 2015 to 2020, he was the spokesperson of the Graduate School “Mathematics inspired by string theory and quantum field theory” at the University of Hamburg, a collaborative research training group funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)[7].
