Christopher Coritsidis

Christopher Coritsidis is an American violinist and philanthropist. He is the founder of the Opus 1 Foundation and an Ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Early life and career[edit]

He began playing the violin at the age of eight through the music program at his local elementary school in upstate New York. Soon after, he began studying privately with Manuel Tsynman – a former violinist with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and teacher at the Moscow Conservatory, and later pursued his studies at the Julliard School and Manhattan School of Music in New York City. In 2008, he moved to Vienna, Austria to study with world-renowned pedagogue, Boris Kuschnir. He has also studied and worked with artists such as Ana Chumachenco, András Schiff, Igor Ozim, Zakhar Bron, Mauricio Fuks and Mikhail Kopelman, among others.

The international career of Coritsidis includes concerts in the Americas, Europe and East Asia. He has performed at international festivals such as the Verbier Festival, Festival Spivakov, Sienna Winter Festival, Aurora Chamber Music Festival, Academia Chigiana, Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, and others. He has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Minato Hall in Tokyo, Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Berlin Philharmonie. As soloist, he has performed with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Bruckner-Linz Orchestra, Buenos Aires Philharmonic, Orquestra Sinfónica Nacional, Orchestre National de Toulouse. Moscow Symphony, Sofia Symphony and more. As a chamber musician, he has performed with Leonidas Kavakos, Ivry Gitlis, Torleif Théeden, Lawrence Power, and members of the Munich Philharmonic. He made his Carnegie Hall recital debut on December 12, 2014 with pianist Eduard Laurel.

He performs on violins crafted by Carlo Tononi (Bologna, c.1720) and Pietro Guarneri (Venice, c.1720–1730). He previously played the 'Emiliani' Stradivarius 1723.

Philanthropy and social work[edit]

In November 2015, he became an ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. His maternal grandmother, Anna, is known to have suffered from the secondary progressive form of the disease. He works with the society to promote awareness for multiple sclerosis and advocate for healthcare advancements and policy reforms to aid those with neurological and autoimmune diseases.

In February 2016, he founded the Opus 1 Foundation. The organization utilizes the arts to combat current global issues. In 2017, the foundation expanded into Europe under the direction of Holly Dorger, principal dancer of the Royal Danish Ballet, and is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
