Christopher L. Freeze is an aviation journalist, author, historian, flight instructor, and world-record holding[1] commercial pilot.
Biography
Freeze was born in Alaska to Coast Guard parents and relocated to California as a child. After becoming an Eagle Scout,[2] Freeze began flying in high school in California, and continued into college at the United States Air Force Academy and San Jose State University.[2] He subsequently became a flight instructor based in Oakland,[2] and earned all the ratings up to Airline Transport Pilot.[3] He also earned a seaplane rating[4] and is certified to fly small drones, being the first to earn this certificate in the United States.[5]
Also while in college, he became interested in aviation archaeology, creating a website researching aircraft crash sites,[6] and appearing on television as an aviation history expert, discussing historic aviation accidents.[7] He was also a member of the 40-person D.B. Cooper "Cold Case Team" led by Thomas J. Colbert.[8]
In 2009, he set a FAI-certified airspeed record, flying a Mooney M20 between Mojave Spaceport and Oakland International Airport.[9][10] He spoke on the topic at the EAA Airventure Oshkosh in 2017.[11]
In 2011, while an aviation science teacher at Oakland Aviation High School,[2][12] he was selected by NASA for their "Explorer Schools" program, to participate in summer research experiences and professional development opportunities "based on their demonstrated innovative use of project materials and an elevated and meaningful level of project participation."[13] That summer, he participated in two research projects with the agency, launching weather balloons at Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Texas and performing microgravity experiments at Glenn Research Center in Ohio. In 2015, he also worked with the agency, flying the Vertical Motion Simulator at NASA's Ames Research Center.[14]
He was named one of 12 AOPA's Outstanding Flight Instructors in 2013[15], and was a key member of their Air Safety Institute's eFIRC revision team. He was recognized again by AOPA for excellence in flight instruction in 2016.[16] As of 2018, he has amassed over 3000 hours of in-flight instruction. He and his teammate won the Hayward Air Rally in 2018, the longest continually-held flying event of the type in North America.[17] The multi-day proficiency challenges aviators to demonstrate their airmanship skills of fuel planning and cross-country flight with or without the use of advanced navigation equipment. The win gartered Freeze recognition from local,[18] state, and federal officials.
Freeze is the author of multiple aviation books and magazine articles,[19] having been published multiple publications, including "Air & Space"[20], "AOPA Pilot"[21], "AOPA Flight Training"[22], "General Aviation News"[23], "EAA Sport Aviation"[24], and "Air Line Pilot" magazines.[25]. Presently, he is the senior aviation technical writer for the Air Line Pilots Association and hosts a YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers.[26][27]
