Christopher Hunter
Christopher H. Hunter is a highly accomplished health care executive and the current chief executive officer of Acadia Healthcare, a role he’s held since April 2022. Under his leadership, Acadia Healthcare, the largest stand-alone behavioral health company in the United States, operates over 250 facilities across 38 states and Puerto Rico[1]. These facilities serve more than 75,000 patients each day, making a significant impact on the behavioral health landscape nationwide. Acadia Healthcare employs approximately 23,500 health care professionals, all dedicated to providing high-quality mental health and addiction treatment services.

Career
Before joining Acadia Healthcare, Hunter held several senior executive roles at Humana, one of the nation’s leading health care providers[2]. As president of the group and military business, he was responsible for managing a $7 billion revenue portfolio that included medical, specialty, and wellness products. He also oversaw Humana’s military business, which provided health care services to nearly 20 million active-duty military personnel, retirees, and their families across 45 states. In this role, Hunter was integral in shaping the strategy and operational effectiveness of Humana’s expansive health care services.
From 2014 to 2018, Hunter served as Humana’s chief strategy officer, where he led the company’s corporate strategy and spearheaded key mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and partnerships that contributed to Humana’s growth.[3] Prior to his time at Humana, he was president of provider markets at TriZetto, a health IT software and services company. He played a pivotal role in taking the company private in 2008 and growing its provider network to over 200,000 health care professionals. Earlier in his career, Hunter held executive positions at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, further solidifying his expertise in health care leadership.
Education
Hunter holds a bachelor’s degree with highest honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He also serves on the board of the honors program at the University of North Carolina, contributing his vast experience and insight to the next generation of leaders.
