During college, he was a design intern for Tanya Taylor and Rosie Assoulin. After graduating, Rogers began working at Diane von Furstenberg as a designer and colorist for 2 years, during which he founded his eponymous brand, Christopher John Rogers, in May 2016.[2]

In 2019, Rogers received top prize of $400,000 at the 16th CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. In September 2019 at New York Fashion Week, he debuted a collection featuring organza ruffles and exaggerated church hats. In 2020, he was named one of Forbes 30 Under 30.[3]

His fashion was featured on the August 2021 cover of American Vogue with Gigi Hadad, the March 2021 LA Times issue with Dua Lipa, the April 2021 cover of British Vogue with Mona Tougaard, and the April 2021 issue of Vogue Brasil with Hailey Bieber. He was named as the American Emerging Designer of the Year at the 2020 CFDA Fashion Awards, and in 2021, was a finalist for the LVMH Prize.[4] The CFDA described Rogers's bold fashions as "emphasiz[ing] quality manufacturing and timeless appeal while encouraging its customers to take up space."[5] His brand is characterized by bold colors, rich textiles, and voluminous silhouettes.[6] His textile development for "Collection 008" led to a collaboration with luxury furniture brand Orior.[7]

In 2022, the Metropolitan Museum of Art displayed his work in its annual fashion exhibit.[8]
