Christopher M. Bache (born 1949) is an American philosopher of religion, author, and professor emeritus in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University. He is best known for a 20-year program of 73 high-dose LSD sessions (1979–1999) and a subsequent 20-year period of integration leading to LSD and the Mind of the Universe (2019).[1] His work bridges philosophy, religious studies, transpersonal psychology, and consciousness research, focusing on the transformative potential of psychedelics and collective consciousness in education.
Career
Bache taught philosophy and religious studies at Youngstown State University from 1978 to 2011, where he received Distinguished Professor Awards for both teaching (1982) and research (2003). He is professor emeritus at Youngstown State University, adjunct faculty in the Department of Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and an emeritus fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences.[2] From 2000 to 2002 he served as Director of Transformative Learning at the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, California.[3]
Education
Bache earned his A.B. in Theology (magna cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame in 1971, followed by an M.A. in New Testament studies from the University of Cambridge in 1973 and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from Brown University in 1978.[3] He also completed post-graduate training at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland between 1981 and 1983.
Research and writing
Bache’s work explores philosophical and psychological questions arising from transpersonal experiences, including reincarnation, near-death experiences, and psychedelic states. He has written that, following protocols inspired by psychiatrist Stanislav Grof, he undertook 73 high-dose LSD sessions over 20 years in a controlled, private setting with a sitter, then spent two decades integrating those experiences before publishing LSD and the Mind of the Universe (2019).[4] In the book and later interviews, Bache reports sequences of death-and-rebirth experience, explorations of “deep time,” and luminous states he terms “Diamond Luminosity,” which he interprets within philosophy of religion and transpersonal psychology.[5][6]

In 2025, volunteers launched the Chris Bache Archive, a digital preservation project hosted on GitHub Pages to present transcripts and links to Bache’s public lectures and interviews from 2009 onward.[17]
Personal life
Bache was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1949. He was raised Roman Catholic and initially entered the seminary before pursuing academic study in religious philosophy. He has three children from his first marriage and lives in Weaverville, North Carolina, with his wife Christina Hardy, an astrological counselor and past-life therapist.[2]
