Christopher Merrill is the Co-founder, President, Chief Executive Officer and largest shareholder of Harrison Street Real Estate LLC,[1] a real estate private equity firm, focused on the Education, Healthcare, and Storage segments. A true entrepreneur, Merrill co-founded the company in 2005, along with Chris Galvin, former CEO of Motorola. Since then the company has reached nearly $20 billion in transactional volume and $15 billion in AUM. Additional roles within the company Merrill holds are a Member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Investment & Management Committees of the Company.

Merrill grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago, attended Tabor Academy, in Marion, Massachusetts for high school, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Roanoke College in 1993 and an MBA from Cass Business School, which is City, University of London's business school, in 2000.
Business ventures[edit]
Prior to co-founding Harrison Street, Merrill was a partner, owner and Managing Director at Heitman, a real estate investment management company, where he developed the firm's presence in Europe, creating the first ever real estate funds exclusively targeting the markets of Central Europe.<[2]> Preqin noted this initial fund was one of the Top 10 performing global funds during vintage years 1996-2000.
Harrison Street Real Estate Capital LLC offers investment products for access to well-defined private and public real estate segments. Merrill and the firm’s senior executives have a long history of identifying unique and innovative investment strategies over their careers, and hence his goal in founding the firm was to create a series of differentiated investment products that span the risk/return spectrum.<[3]> As an industry expert and active thought leader in the real estate asset classes of senior living, student housing, medical office and self-storage, he is often asked discuss these subjects, as he did in 2017 for Bloomberg on investing in student housing.<[4]>
In July 2018, Colliers International Group (CIGI) purchased the interests of the Galvin family and became Harrison Street’s new strategic partner. <[5]> Merrill is retaining the role of President and CEO of Harrison Street Real Estate.
