Christopher Schlaeffer
Christopher Schlaeffer (born August 23, 1969) is a European tech entrepreneur and activist, notably recognized as the Founder and Chairman of the London-based generative AI company NYOUM.[1][2][3] He has held leadership roles in various global telecommunications and technology companies, including VEON,[4] Deutsche Telekom,[5][6] T-Mobile International, and T-Online. Schlaeffer is an activist for Equality of Opportunity and member of the board at Amnesty International.[7]
Early Life and Education
Born on August 23, 1969, in Mittersill, Austria, Schlaeffer was raised by his mother alongside two brothers and a sister. He graduated from the Vienna University of Economics and Business[8] in 1993, with a thesis on carbon taxes.[9]
Career
Schlaeffer commenced his career at Accenture.[10] In 1998, he joined Deutsche Telekom, assuming the role of Chief Strategy Officer at the age of 31, playing a lead role in the portfolio expansion and transformation of Deutsche Telekom. His responsibilities extended to encompass research and development, technology (CTO), IT (CIO) and venture capital for the group.[11]
In 2006, Schlaeffer assumed the role of Chief Product and Innovation Officer[5] at Deutsche Telekom, overseeing the global product portfolio. His tenure involved establishing strategic partnerships with major tech companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Google. Notably, he spearheaded Apple's first iPhone partnership outside the US and presented the world's most popular operating system, Android,[12][13][14] in a subway station in New York on September 23, 2008 alongside industry figures like Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Andy Rubin. He also served as the last CEO of T-Online, Europe's largest ISP before its re-integration into Deutsche Telekom's fixed-line business.[6][15]
In 2010, Schlaeffer transitioned to entrepreneurship and founded yetu, aiming to establish the world's first open connected home platform for web applications across devices and operating systems.[16][17]
In 2016, Schlaeffer joined VEON, a global mobile network operator with over 200 million customers, holding the positions of Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Digital Officer.[4] Under his tenure, the company returned to revenue growth and rebranded into VEON.[18]
In 2018, Schlaeffer returned to entrepreneurship, as Founder and Chairman of NYOUM, a generative AI company. NYOUM operates a private social network, uniting social media and messaging while safeguarding privacy.[3][19] Since 2022, it is available on iOS and Android in the US, Canada, Latin America, India, Korea, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia, and the UK.[20]
Personal Life and Advocacy
Schlaeffer is a parent to two daughters and a son. He is an advocate for an "eco-social" market economy, equality, and an open information society. Schlaeffer is actively involved in social causes and serves as a board member at Amnesty International and as the patron of iamtheCode,[21][22][23] a charity supporting coding education for girls from marginalized communities. Schlaeffer is also the founder and chairman of activism group,[24] a social enterprise aiming at Equality of Opportunity at large. activism group is headquartered in the "Austrian House[25]"[26] designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
Distinction and Awards
Throughout his career, Schlaeffer has received notable accolades. He was acknowledged as a "Young Global Leader"[27][28][29] by the World Economic Forum in 2007. As the founder of yetu, he received the German energy efficiency prize and the "Landmark in the Land of Ideas" award in 2015, presented by the German federal president in recognition of contributions to the digital revolution. Schlaeffer was also recognized among the "100 Most Innovative Chief Digital Officers globally" and listed as one of the "Top 50 Innovators To Watch."
In 2022, he was honored as the Manager Of The Year in Austria by the Vienna University of Economics.[8]
