Christopher Suprun
Stephen Christopher Suprun Jr., is a politician who was a Republican elector for Texas for the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. He gained widespread media attention after The New York Times published an opinion column by him titled "Why I Will Not Cast My Electoral Vote for Donald Trump".[1] This led to him being commonly referred to as a "faithless elector".
Suprun faced what he labeled as a smear campaign against him for his public statement, including public revelations of past bankruptcies and accusations of stolen valor,[2] faking charities, and being implicated in the Ashley Madison data breach.[3]
A news team at Dallas-Fort Worth television station WFAA investigated the claims independently, noting discrepancies in Suprun's résumé and the lack of any record placing him at the Pentagon on 9/11. As of December 18, he had declined to respond to WFAA reporters, either before or after their broadcast and article.[4]
Suprun was one of two Texas electors who publicly announced their intention to refuse to vote for Trump; the other, Art Sisneros, resigned his position rather than cast a faithless vote.[5] On December 19, Suprun voted for John Kasich with his Electoral College presidential vote, joining elector Bill Greene, who voted for Ron Paul, as one of two Texans to cast their votes for someone other than Trump. Suprun cast his vice presidential vote for Carly Fiorina, instead of Trump's running mate Mike Pence.
Republican party presidential elector nominees for Texas were named at the state convention on May 14, 2016.[6] Rule No. 39 of the Republican Party of Texas states, “. . . Each such nominee for Presidential Elector, prior to the report of the National Nominations Committee, shall file with the Chairman of the National Nominations Committee an affidavit in writing as to the nominee’s commitment to vote for the Republican Party’s nominees for President and Vice President. The report of the National Nominations Committee shall include only nominees who have so filed such affidavit. The report of the National Nominations Committee must include the nominees from the Congressional District who have so filed affidavits. The Convention shall then elect the Presidential Electors.”[7]
