Christopher Templeton
Christopher Frederick Templeton (born 13 December 1960) is a Scottish/Hungarian scriptwriter and director whose radio plays and television documentaries highlighted human rights abuses in the United States and Europe during the post Cold War era of the 1990s.[citation needed]
Early life and education
Templeton was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of the Glasgow playwright and screenwriter, William Templeton. He graduated from the London International Film School in 1985 but his first writing work was for radio.
Career
Templeton scripted and directed several productions for the BBC World Service's Play of the Week series, which broadcast new and politically charged plays. Templeton directed Play of the Week's production of Ad de Bont's Mirad, A Boy from Bosnia,[1][self-published source] which was well-received by Sue Gaisford of The Independent, who described the production as "..almost unbearably moving". [2] While Mirad amplified the human cost of the Bosnian genocide, later productions, like Rupa Lucian, Child of Romania [3] [self-published source] exposed the atrocities of the Securitate, Romania’s secret police. Templeton continued at the World Service to write and present the first non-religious content for the Pause for Thought series with leading secularists including Nicolas Walter and Dr. Richard Dawkins.[citation needed]
Death row campaign
In 1996, Templeton coordinated the UK campaign in support of Manuel Salazar, who had been sentenced to death for the 1984 shooting of a police officer, and had become known for paintings he created while on death row.[4] Templeton also produced a news documentary about Salazar, entitled Trial and Error, which was broadcast on NBC.[citation needed] An appeal secured a second trial for Salazar, after his initial conviction was overturned on the basis of erroneous jury instructions.[5]
