Christos Megalou is a Greek banker and currently CEO of Piraeus Bank Group, which is the largest bank in Greece and one of the four systemic banks that currently operate in the country. He is considered to be one of the most experienced Greek bankers, as he has worked in numerous international financial institutions, capital markets, commercial and investment banks.[1] [2]

Early life[edit]

Megalou owns a bachelor degree in Economics from the University of Athens, Greece (1981), while he also holds an MBA in Finance from Aston University in Birmingham, UK (1982).

Career[edit]

Megalou began his professional career in 1984, where he started working at Arthur Andersen & Co (Athens, Greece) as an auditor, until 1986. He then moved to Agricultural Bank of Greece (ATEbank) and became member of the Internal Audit Division, until 1989. Following that, he started working as Director in Barclays' first investment banking arm, which was established in 1985 under the name “Barclays de Zoete Wedd (BZW)”. Initially, he worked as a manager in the Corporate – Finance division and was appointed later as Head of the BWZ office in Athens. After that, he was relocated to London and stayed in BWZ for a total of 8 years (from 1989 to 1997). Later on, he moved to Credit Suisse Group from BWZ, which Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) purchased in late 1997, as director in the Investment Banking Division. He stayed in Credit Suisse until 2013, holding numerous managerial positions. In particular, from 1997 until 2002, he was director at Credit Suisse Europe having under his supervision the operations in Greece and Cyprus. In 2002, he was appointed managing director and country manager for Greece and Cyprus, where he remained at this position until 2010. During the period 2010 - 2013, he was appointed managing director and Co-Head of Investment Banking for Southern Europe area, while in 2013 he was appointed Vice-Chairman of Investment Banking for Southern Europe. Following that, Megalou returned from London and on June 2013 was appointed CEO of Eurobank Ergasias until February 2015. He then moved to Fairfax Financial Holdings (Toronto and London) as Senior Advisor and in 2016 he was appointed Senior Advisor for the Advent International (London), which is one of the largest and most experienced global private equity firms. On March 2017, Megalou has been appointed CEO of Piraeus Bank Group.
