Chrome Readiness Tool (CRA), formerly referred to as the Chrome OS Readiness Tool or ChromeOS Readiness Tool, is a proprietary software assessment tool developed by Codimite. The tool is used by information technology administrators to assess whether existing Windows device fleets, applications, browser usage, and peripherals may be suitable for migration to ChromeOS or ChromeOS Flex.[1]
An earlier Google document described the Chrome OS Readiness Tool as a private assessment tool that categorised Windows devices according to their readiness to switch to Chrome OS and provided details about application usage.[2] In later references, including Insight’s Chrome Readiness Assessment page, the assessment is described under the Chrome Readiness naming and is identified as a Codimite assessment available through Insight.[3]
History
The tool was originally referred to as the Chrome OS Readiness Tool. A Google document described it as a tool for assessing which Windows devices in an organisation could switch to Chrome OS. The document stated that the tool generated reports, categorised devices by cloud-readiness, and provided application-usage details.[2]
In October 2024, Chrome Unboxed reported that Google had introduced a newer version of the ChromeOS Readiness Tool during Chrome Summit 2024. The article stated that an earlier version of the tool had existed for nearly four years and that the newer version was intended to help administrators make a quantitative assessment of whether a move to ChromeOS or ChromeOS Flex was feasible.[1]
In August 2025, Google’s Android Enterprise Community described the ChromeOS Readiness Tool as a Codimite-developed solution. The post stated that the tool had originally been created to identify users suitable for ChromeOS pilots and had later evolved into a broader compatibility assessment platform.[4]
The tool is now also referred to as Chrome Readiness Tool or Chrome Readiness Assessment. Insight lists a Chrome Readiness Assessment by Codimite as a solution brief related to Google ChromeOS migration.[3]
Functionality
The Chrome Readiness Tool uses a Windows data collection application and a web-based dashboard to provide information for ChromeOS migration assessment. Chrome Unboxed reported that administrators could install the Windows application on existing Windows devices to collect information used to assess whether a device fleet was suitable for migration to ChromeOS.[1]
The Google document stated that the earlier Chrome OS Readiness Tool logged application usage over a 30-day period and compared used applications against a verified Google database to determine whether applications were cloud-ready.[2] It classified devices into categories such as ready to switch, ready with verification, or blocked from switching, depending on application compatibility and usage.[2]
The Android Enterprise Community post listed readiness reports, browser insights, application usage analysis, hardware inventory, and peripheral-related reporting as features of the tool.[4]
Application and device analysis
The tool provides administrators with information about applications used on existing devices. Chrome Unboxed reported that the tool collects information about applications used in the foreground and background, as well as peripherals used by employees.[1]
The Google document stated that applications not found in the default database were highlighted for administrators to classify as cloud-ready or not cloud-ready according to organisational requirements.[2]
Reporting
The Chrome Readiness Tool generates reports intended for IT administrators reviewing ChromeOS migration readiness. Chrome Unboxed reported that reports could be sorted by group, allowing administrators to identify departments or user groups that may be more suitable for migration than others.[1]
Insight describes the Chrome Readiness Assessment by Codimite as a way for organisations to understand their current environment before a ChromeOS migration.[3]
Data handling
The Google document stated that data collected by the Chrome OS Readiness Tool remained private, could be stored where the organisation designated, and was not shared with Google.[2] Chrome Unboxed similarly reported that collected data was visible only to users with a unique token and that Google did not have access to the data.[1]
The Android Enterprise Community post stated that data collection is controlled by the administrator and that stored data is secured with encryption.[4]
Availability through partners
Insight lists Chrome Readiness Assessment as a solution brief under Google ChromeOS and migration topics. The page identifies the assessment as being by Codimite and available from Insight.[3]
