Chua Kee Lock (born May 2, 1961) is a Singaporean businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He is currently the CEO of Vertex Venture Holdings, a Singapore-headquartered venture capital investment holding company, where he is the Managing Partner of Vertex Ventures SE Asia & India as well as the Chairman of the Vertex Growth Fund. Mr Chua joined Vertex in 2008 [1] and transformed the Vertex Group into a global venture capital network from USD 180M in 2008 to over USD 3.5B. [2] Most recently, he has been appointed as Singapore's Non-Resident Ambassador to Cuba and Panama. [3]
Early life and education
Chua Kee Lock is a second-generation Singaporean of ethnic Chinese ancestry of Hokkien descent. His father was originally from Kinmen and moved to Singapore in the early 1960s as a businessman, where Kee Lock was born. He attended Maris Stella High School and achieved outstanding results for his O-level examinations and went to National Junior College. Throughout his schooling years in Singapore, Kee Lock was an avid basketball player and the captain of his National Junior College's basketball team in 1979. Additionally, he was an active member in the band and played the clarinet in secondary school and at junior college.
Kee Lock also holds a B.Eng degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a M.Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.
Career & Other Involvements
Kee Lock began his career as a Quality Assurance engineer in Hewlett Packard Singapore after graduating from University of Wisconsin, Madison (1982-1984). He worked there for two years pursuing a Master's degree at Stanford University under the NatSteel’s (acquired by Tata Steel) overseas scholarship. Following the completion of his graduate degree, Kee Lock worked in various positions within the NatSteel group from 1986 to 1997[4]. His roles included being the Vice President of Transpac Capital Pte Ltd (venture capital firm) and the General Manager of NatSteel Technologies. Thereafter, Kee Lock left NatSteel Group in 1997 to co-found MediaRing.com, one of the early providers of Voice over IP services at that time in the world. As President of MediaRing, Kee Lock pushed for the first successful listing of a company with no profits on the Singapore Exchange in November 1999.[5] The IPO of MediaRing had notable investors such as Temasek Holdings, investment arm of the Singapore government, and Hong Kong cybertycoon Richard Li's Pacific Century Group.[6] At its peak, MediaRing had a market capitalization of over $US1.2billion.
After the success of building his own startup, Kee Lock left the company and returned to the NatSteel group where he became the CEO and Director of Intraco Pte Ltd from 2000 to 2001.[7] From 2001 to 2003, Kee Lock served as Deputy President of NatSteel[8] and then as Managing Director of Walden International[9], a U.S.-headquartered venture capital firm from 2003 to 2006. Prior to joining Vertex in September 2008, Mr Chua was the President and Executive Director of Biosensors International Group, Ltd., a developer and manufacturer of medical devices used in interventional cardiology and critical care procedures.[10]
Kee Lock currently serves as Lead Independent Director of Yongmao Holdings Ltd[11] (listed in Singapore Exchange) and Independent Director of Shenzhen Chipscreen Biosciences Co Ltd[12] (Listed in the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Board). Previously, Kee Lock was the Independent Director of Logitech International S.A[13], a global company listed on the Switzerland Exchange and NASDAQ from 2000-2016.
