Chuck Kaye (DJ)
Chuck Kaye - Hard Rock and Heavy Metal DJ/VJ/MC/Host/Booker/Promoter.
Most known for his 49 month run at the legendary venue in Brooklyn known as L'Amour. Chuck was nicknamed "The Roar of L'Amour" by Mike Tramp of the multi-platinum band White Lion.
After almost 4 decades of silence, Kaye returned in 2025 to tell the truth about the 80's hard rock and metal scene and launched a behind the scenes story-telling website TheRoarofLamour.com
Early life
Born in NYC, Chuck moved to Eltingville, Staten Island NY in 1976 and attended Tottenville, High School and in 1981, started working at The Factory Rock Nightclub in Prince's Bay.
One night a DJ called in sick and recommended Chuck fill in due to his extensive music knowledge and large record collection and Chuck was quickly hired as the new DJ.
He quickly gained a reputation for knowing what the crowd wanted to hear and especially stood out for his heavy metal knowledge.
When The Factory closed in 1983, Chuck thought his DJ career was over until an owner of L'Amour - The Rock Capital of Brooklyn asked him to consider their club and in October 1984, he began a crazy, worldwide 49 months that made metal history.
Nicknamed "The Roar of L'Amour", Chuck was synonymous with the metal scene and largely considered the area's "voice".[1][2]
1984-1988: L'Amour - The Rock Capital of Brooklyn
Chuck Kaye was known as "The Roar of L'Amour" as nicknamed by Mike Tramp of multi-platinum act White Lion in 1987 due to his command of the microphone and aggressive personality.
Kaye was the house DJ/VJ/MC/Host at L'Amour from October 1984 to November 1988 (largely considered the "heyday"), when the owners decided to replace both Kayne/Roxstaar.
Prior to that he was DJ/VJ at L'Amour East until the owners left that venue and wanted him in the legendary Brooklyn club (with them).
He was the DJ most remembered for his 1980s influence and appearances on radio stations 92.3 WXRK (KRock) in NYC and WSOU in NJ, national magazines Details, Faces, Hit Parader, New Yorker and others, industry trade papers Billboard, Concrete Foundations, The Hard Report and others, MTV, VH1, etc.
He was also a booker, promoter and MC.
In 2025, he came on Facebook to tell the true stories of the L'Amour metal scene with lengthy post on behind the scenes stories with bands like (Iron Maiden, W.A.S.P., Slayer, Megadeth, White Lion, Overkill, Cheap Trick, etc.), the excess partying and why he quit. After he quit, various DJ's split the duties until the original club closed 2 years later.
In 1988, Details dubbed him "Mr. Personality" in a long article on the metal scene and who influenced it, citing Chuck as "the guy the kids related to".[3][4]
In 2026, NY1 News reported: Kaye was 22 years old when he started at L’amour. “I began on my 22nd birthday in 1984, which says two things. One, I’m old. And the other one, man, I was just a kid, and they gave me the keys to the L’amour car. And for 49 months I ran it the best I could.” [5]
While at L'Amour, Chuck Kaye presided over world premiere music and videos by such bands as Anthrax, White Lion, Overkill, Nuclear Assault and the highly anticipated world premiere of 'And Justice for All' by Metallica which sold over 11 million copies [6],[7] In 2026, Spectrum One New quoted Kaye remembering premiering the album: "In 1988 I had the world premiere of their classic album ‘And Justice For All.’ Their record company executive gave it to me and said you are the first person to play this" [8]as well as many others.

Legendary music executive Monte Connor said “Chuck had the perfect voice and demeanor for the DJ position. He sounded like a god coming over the L’Amour speakers to the teenage me. I never got to meet him back then, but had someone walked me up to the DJ booth I would have been as star struck as if I was backstage meeting my thrash heroes who just got off the stage. Being at the club in the 80s was a magical time and Chuck’s voice just added so much to the whole experience.” [10] [11]

Chuck Kaye is now retired and currently disabled with a dire heart condition.
A website called TheRoarofLamour.com, opened on January 5th, 2026 that pays tribute to Chuck Kaye, L'Amour and the classic era.
Spectrum 1 News (NY1) profiled Kaye's return with a news story (TV and article) discussing www.theroaroflamour.com. A video and discussion aired twelve times on February 9th with an article going live (same day) on their NY1.com website[12]
In June 2026, Creem magazine ran a 12-page profile of Kaye, labeling him "the ringmaster of metal's most important club in the '80s", and noting his ability to create a "tribal experience" for the subculture.[13]
