Chum Ehelepola is an Australian actor, film maker and teacher.[1] Ehelepola stars as the news producer, Dennis Tibb,[2][3] in the ABC TV series, The Newsreader,[4][5] and appears in the Australian comedy series Preppers[6][7] as the character Lionel.

Early life[edit]

Ehelepola was born in New Zealand.[2] and raised in both Sri Lanka[2] and Perth, Australia[8][2]

Career[edit]

Ehelepola has also starred in a number of other Australian TV series, including No Activity[9][10] as the character Steve,[11] Stateless,[9] and The Straits.[8]

Ehelepola also appeared in a number of US television shows whilst residing in Los Angeles, including the AMC TV series Lodge 49,[9][12] the Netflix series Lady Dynamite,[9][12] as well as cast as the character Ramtish in the Disney live action film Mulan.[12][13][14]

Ehelepola is due to appear in the Disney+ original U.K. series Nautilus. Ehelepola's role in the series is as the character Jagadish.[15]

Ehelepola has strong feelings regarding the need for greater screen diversity in the television and movie characters. The struggle to find work in Australia led him to seek acting work in the US, where he began to obtain roles not specific to his ethnic background.[2] His role as Dennis Tibb in The Newsreader is one which his Sri Lankan background is specific to the character.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Ehelopola attended Hampton Senior High School in the Perth suburb of Morley. Ehelepola is a qualified Civil Engineer,[9][2] having attended Curtin University in Western Australia. Ehelpeola followed his passion of acting, taking the path of washing dishes, serving coffee and acting classes on the way to building a successful acting career.

Ehelepola also founded the Sydney Actors Collective, providing acting classes to a number of upcoming Australian acting talent.
