Cian Dorr is professor of philosophy at New York University. He works primary in Metaphysics, Philosophical Logic, Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, and Philosophy of Physics.
Career and Recognition
Dorr received his B.A in Philosophy and English from University College Cork, and his M.A in Philosophy from the same institution in 1995.[1]. Subsequently, he went to Princeton University, where he was advised by David Lewis and received his P.h.D in Philosophy in 2000[2]. His dissertation, The Simplicity of Everything, argues that “Strictly and literally speaking, there are no complex entities”.
He has been professor at many of the top ranked philosophy departments in the English speaking world, including New York University, University of Pittsburgh, and University of Oxford.[3]
Notable Contributions
In 2002, Dorr argued for a 'thirder' solution to the Sleeping Beauty problem. The argument turns on an analogy with a variant case, in which a coin-toss on Monday night determines whether one's memories of Monday are permanently erased, or merely suspended in such a way that they will return some time after one wakes up on Tuesday.[4]
In 2011, his paper (co-authored with Frank Arntzenius) 'Calculus as Geometry' worked to extend the nominalistic project started by Hartry Field in Science Without Numbers to modern physical theories like General Relativity based in differential geometry.[5]
With his papers Classicism[6] and To Be F Is To Be G[7], the second of which has been cited almost 300 times, Dorr has played an influential role in the development of higher order metaphysics.
Recognition
His work is highly cited and has been published in top journals like Philosophical Review, Mind, Noûs, and Analysis[8]. His paper ’Against Counterfactual Miracles’ Philosophical Review (2016), was selected for Philosopher’s Annual, an annual selection of the ten best papers in philosophy[9].
He has been invited to the Aristotelian Society, described by Ved Mehta as the "crème de la crème of all philosophical societies" twice[10][11][12].
Gideon Rosen, former chair of the Princeton department of philosophy, has described him a leading figure in metaphysics, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of language and epistemology.[13] Rosen has described his work as “marked by extraordinary rigor and intensity, but (...) also filled with surprises and flights of imagination that show the kind of creativity and depth of insight that was apparent to all of us when he was a student here but that has been borne out abundantly by his subsequent distinguished career.”[13]
He delivered the 2020 Carl Hempel lectures, previously titled the ‘Three Lecture Series’ at Princeton University[14]. The lecture has been given by other notable philosophers, including Saul Kripke, John Hawthorne, Kwame Anthony Appiah, and Sally Haslanger. His lecture was titled The Multiplicity of Meaning[13].
In 2022, he was Petrus Hispanus Lecturer at the University of Lisbon. His lecture was titled Higher-Order Quantification and the Elimination of Objects[15]. The lecture has been delivered by other notable philosophers including Hillary Putnam, Timothy Williamson, Ned Block, David Chalmers, Richard Jeffrey, and Susan Carey.
