Circus Bazaar Magazine is a biannual periodical produced in Oslo, Norway[1][2] and distributed globally in print and digital format[3][4]. It was launched in 2013 as a platform for social and political criticism but has since evolved into an examination of knowledge and ideas across a wide spectrum of human endeavour.[5] The magazine uses various forms of creative imagery and literature in its presentation as well as an elaborate taxonomy of categories reflected through various Circus metaphors.[6]
Its byline "Penned from the crooked timber of humanity" is an adaptation of a quotation by Immanuel Kant from his essay "Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Purpose" (1784);
"Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made."
Its editorial position is considered respectful of the liberal tradition but with a strong sense of humour and tragedy. The magazine is owned and published by the Circus Bazaar Company and is currently edited by Shane Alexander Caldwell.[7]

Circus Bazaar Magazine plays a central role in the creative development and execution of various projects that are supported by the Circus Bazaar Company.
Documentary film
The Serpent in Paradise
Just a few weeks after the founding of Circus Bazaar Magazine in 2013, Shane Alexander Caldwell, the founding owner and editor, witnessed and filmed a case of severe Police misconduct in Oslo, Norway that involved plain-clothed Norwegian Police officers pushing batons deep in the throat of a handcuffed man whom they suspected to be concealing narcotics.[8] As investigations would later show, the man was driven far outside the city limits of Oslo and left in a remote location. Circus Bazaar Magazine produced a documentary film entitled "The Serpent in Paradise"[9] that acted as a platform for the release of this footage and other investigative material.[10] A syndicated release to domestic and international news platforms would eventuate in the prosecution of Oslo Police District as an organisation for "gross misconduct" on the basis that the behaviour exhibited by the police in question was not unique, but entrenched in routines.[11]
Political theatre
Nuclear Climate Change
In 2021 Circus Bazaar Magazine was approached by the International Forum for Understanding to creatively produce a large event to be held alongside COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, that looked at the relationship between Nuclear War and Climate Change, and how both represented existential threats to humanity. The event entitled "Nuclear Climate Change"[12] was held at Stirling Castle and involved elaborate theatrical depictions of the historical ideas that led to the current situation, as well as keynote speeches from the Deputy Leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Asle Toje and Christine Parthemore of the Council on Strategic Risks.[13]
Music videos
In 2020 Circus Bazaar Magazine attracted the attention of the US label Nature Sounds Records and their artist R.A. the Rugged Man who agreed to have the Circus Bazaar Company creatively produce two major film projects from the artist album All My Heroes Are Dead. Both films were written, produced and co directed by Shane Alexander Caldwell, the editor and owner of Circus Bazaar Magazine.[14]
R.A. the Rugged Man: Hate Speech[15]
In October 2020 R.A. the Rugged Man would travel to Oslo, Norway for the production of Hate Speech which was filmed in the town of Moss and Fredriksten fortress.[16] The film would later be released by Circus Bazaar Magazine in November 2022.[17] The film was funded in part by one of the biggest regional film funds in Norway, Viken Film Centre.[18]
R.A. the Rugged Man: Dragon Fire, featuring Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, Kool G Rap & Xx3eme[19]
January 2021 the Circus Bazaar Company produced the music video "Dragon Fire" featuring Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, Kool G Rap, Xx3eme. The film would also star Logan Marshall-Green[20] (Dragon Fire) and Peter Greene (The Big Boss) as well as cameos by the rappers A-F-R-O, Joe Fatal, Donny Diablo and former four-time national boxing champion Eric Kelly. The film was co-written by Joe Lynch and the editor of Circus Bazaar Magazine, Shane Alexander Caldwell.[21]
The film gained special selection status at the Bergen International Film Festival (BIFF).[22] [23]

Circus Bazaar Magazine is built upon an elaborate taxonomy that divides the universe of knowledge into ten distinct classes that are presented via the metaphor of various parts of the traditional Circus.[24]
