CitySprint[1] is a UK logistics company providing same day courier and logistics services, parcel delivery, UK overnight delivery, and international courier services. Originally founded in 2001 by Ian Lewis and Andrew Bernard[2], the company delivers in the United Kingdom and Worldwide. These services include dynamic delivery timeslots through retail brand On the dot, specialist healthcare services, in-boot delivery, a technical courier service, and a print and mail service.

CitySprint has a wholly-owned network of over 40 service centres and over 5,000 self-employed couriers across the UK and customers across most sectors including retail, healthcare, manufacturing and professional services. As CitySprint is a delivery brand, it has direct competition with other similar companies such as Rico Logistics, TNT Express, as well as delivery companies such as Addison Lee. Today, CitySprint (under the CitySprint Group) sits alongside a range of brands such as Transworld, CitySprint Health, CitySprint Office and On the dot.

History[edit]

CitySprint was founded by Ian Lewis and Andrew Bernard in 2001 as a same day courier company.

Job booking, scheduling and courier tracking has been on CitySprint’s own operating platform CityTrak since 2003.[3] Later on, in 2009, CitySprint launched an industry first real-time GPS tracking of the courier, allowing customers to track their deliveries whilst the courier is en route. In the same year, with the use of MetaPack delivery management software, CitySprint helped ASOS.com go live with their same day delivery service to those living within the M25 and surrounding areas as well a 50 mile radius of their warehouse in Hemel Hempstead.[4]

In 2010, the then newly appointed CEO Patrick Gallagher, negotiated a successful management buyout of CitySprint, with private equity group Dunedin[5] and in 2016, LDC also joined as an investor.[6][7] Patrick Gallagher has since been awarded UK EY Entrepreneur of the Year and Dealmaker of the Year, both in 2014.[8] In 2009, CitySprint Healthcare (now known as CitySprint Health) was also launched as a separate brand, specialising in delivery services to the medical and pharmaceutical industries.[9]

David Burtenshaw was appointed as CitySprint’s chairman in 2011.[10] CitySprint then rebranded to include the ‘We deliver’ tagline in 2012.[11] CitySprint were also in high demand during the London 2012 Olympics, adopting different ways of ensuring deliveries arrived on time during the event.[12]

The CitySprint In-night service launched in 2013.[13] Aimed at organisations with a mobile workforce, CitySprint In-night collects all items (such as stock, parts or equipment) that the workforce will need for the next day and delivers them overnight, to a safe location of the customer’s choice.

QuikQuote, CitySprint’s online credit card platform was launched in 2013. The CitySprint ‘MyCourier’ app was also launched that year which broadens access to same day services across mobile and online apps.[14]

The On the dot brand was launched in 2015[15][16]. It is a one, two and four hour delivery slot service built on a market-leading technology platform that allows retailers to dynamically display timeslot availability to their customers. It is available across the UK. In the same year, Wickes partnered with CitySprint-owned On the dot and allowed for Wickes to offer one-hour timeslot delivery for over 7,000 products.[17] MatchesFashion.com also introduced a 90 minute delivery and returns service for customers within the M25 in 2016, also in partnership with On the dot[18]. ASOS partnered with On the dot in 2017 to launch ASOS Instant, allowing shoppers to receive deliveries the same day if purchased before 10am.

LastMileLink Technologies, CitySprint’s technology incubator, was created in 2016 to develop innovative, next generation software to overcome traditional last mile delivery challenges. In July 2017, LastMileLink Technologies announced the development of the CitySprint courier app for self-employed couriers that work with CitySprint. In May 2018, LastMileLink Technologies merged with its sister brand, On the dot.

Brands[edit]

There are numerous brands underneath the CitySprint Group. These include CitySprint, CitySprint Health, CitySprint Office, Transworld, and On the dot.

Acquisitions[edit]

CitySprint has acquired numerous companies to add to the Group. Dunedin was involved in 22 of these acquisitions in the six year period between 2010 and 2016 when they were the main private equity partner. This support allowed CitySprint to grow and become the UK’s largest same day courier business.[19][20][21][22][23]

Press and sponsorship[edit]

London Olympics, 2012[edit]

During the 2012 London Olympics, CitySprint hired rollerbladers and joggers to help with the restrictions in traffic, parking and vehicle access around London. They also increased their motorbike and bicycle fleet as a contingency plan due to transport disruption. The Games, which ran from 27 July to 9 September, had a 109 mile Olympic network route which affected transport in London. Customers were also offered extended opening times at CitySprint service centres for collecting items.

Easter Eggs, 2016[edit]

In 2016, Easter eggs were collected as part of an initiative across 40 CitySprint service centres nationwide aiming to share a ‘mountain’ of eggs to local charities. The Norwich CitySprint found themselves inundated with over 2,000 Easter eggs to deliver and CitySprint collected over 10,000 eggs in total, all of which were donated to charities across the country.[33]

Ashley Sutton Sponsorship[edit]

In 2017, CitySprint sponsored British racing driver Ashley Sutton during his second year in the British Touring Car Championship.[34] In October 2017, Ashley came first in the table to win the championship.
