Civic Studios, officially known as Civic Studios Productions Pvt. Ltd., is a media production company, established in 2019,[1] by Anushka Shah.[2] Based in Mumbai and London, the studio develops, produces, and finances feature films.

The production company mainly develops films in the genre of social impact and has received grants from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies.[3]

In 2025, Civic Studios was selected as part of 130 delegates and a select 40 delegates from the cultural industry to travel with the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, on his official trip to India.[4][5]

History

Civic Studios was founded in 2019 and incubated at MIT Media Lab.[5]

It produced its first short film in 2021, Vakeel Babu, which streamed on Amazon Prime Video, starring actors Abhishek Banerjee, Loveleen Mishra, Hetal Gada and Bhamini Oza and directed by Sumit Purohit.[6] The film was also selected for the New York Indian Film Festival 2022.[citation needed]

In 2024, Civic Studios produced 'Family Aaj Kal',[7] a 5-episode comedy-drama series starring Apoorva Arora, Nitesh Pandey and Sonali Sachdev[8]. The series streamed on SonyLIV.[9]

In 2025, Civic Studios partnered with Vertigo Releasing for UK[10] and Ireland distribution of Santosh,[11], a feature film starring Shahana Goswami, Sunita Rajwar Pratibha Awasthy and directed by Sandhya Suri.[12]

In December 2025, the production house collaborated with Gurinder Chadha to produce Christmas Karma[13], a film loosely based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and adapted to immigrant experiences in the UK[14]. The movie starred Kunal Nayyar, Eva Longoria, Billy Porter, and others.[15]
