Early Life[edit]
Richards was born to Nina and Bob Richards in Hillingdon, England on August 17, 1977. Her mother would later enroll her to ballet and tap lessons at the age of four. She would later have her first vocal performance in a school assembly at the age of twelve. This was followed by her foray into musical theater when she played the role of Maria von Trapp in her school's production of The Sound of Music, and then the role of Nancy in Oliver![1]
Career[edit]
1995-1997: Beginnings with TSD[edit]
Richards first debuted in the music industry as one third of the short-lived English pop trio, TSD[2] which debuted with the single, "Heart and Soul"[3]. After "Heart and Soul" charted at #69 in the United Kingdom[4] and #256 in Australia[5], the trio went on to release "Baby I Love You" which is a cover of The Ronettes song of the same name[6]. However, they disbanded after the release of the second single. After which, Richards temporarily left the music industry and worked for seven months as a receptionist where she won a "temporary worker of the month" award for 1997[7].
1997-2001: Steps[edit]
On May 7, 1997, Richards attended an audition for a pop group[8] which was advertised in The Stage newspaper at the behest of her mother[9]. It was there where she performed "River Deep Mountain High" by Tina Turner and "I Am Blessed" by The Eternals[10]. She passed the audition and joined the final line-up of Steps along with Ian "H" Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans, Faye Tozer and Lisa Scott-Lee.
On December 1997, Steps debuted with its first single, "5, 6, 7, 8" which went on to chart #11 in the UK Singles Chart[11] and #1 in the UK Indie Chart[12].
