Clandeboye Golf Club
Clandeboye Golf Club is a golf club located near Conlig in County Down, Northern Ireland. Set within 320 acres of heathland, it offers 36 holes across two courses: the Championship Dufferin Course and the shorter Ava Course. The club takes its name from the historic Clandeboye Estate, the seat of the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava.
History
The first golf course on the Clandeboye site was completed in 1930, designed by William Rennick Robinson.[1] In 1933, a proposal was agreed to formally establish Clandeboye Golf Club.
In 1969, the present 36-hole heathland complex was created under the direction of a German golf course architect, with assistance from Ryder Cup players Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas.[2] Club teams have won seven major titles, placing Clandeboye among the top ten clubs in Ireland.
Courses
- The Dufferin Course – an 18-hole championship course with views over Belfast Lough.
- The Ava Course – a shorter 18-hole heathland course, described as tricky and challenging.
Both courses are named after the titles associated with the Clandeboye Estate and the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava.
Notable events
The club has hosted European Men's and Ladies' tournaments, the European Challenge Tour, and numerous amateur events organised by the Golfing Union of Ireland.[3]
