Clarence F. Birkhead
Clarence F. Birkhead is an American law enforcement officer and native of Asheboro, North Carolina. Birkhead started his law enforcement career in 1984 as a deputy sheriff for the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. In 1988, Birkhead moved to Durham and joined the Duke University Police Department where he became police chief in 1998. Birkhead led the private law enforcement agency until leaving to accept the position of police chief for the town of Hillsborough in 2005.[1] Birkhead resigned as chief in 2005 to focus on his campaign for Orange County Sheriff.[2] In 2018, Birkhead beat incumbent Michael D. Andrews in the race for Durham County Sheriff and became the county's first African American sheriff.[3]
