Species

Claveliimonas is a genus of obligately anaerobic, Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile, rod-shaped bacteria in the family Lachnospiraceae.[2] The type species is Claveliimonas bilis.[1]

Taxonomy

The generic name combines the surname of the German microbiologist Thomas Clavel with the Neo-Latin noun monas, meaning a unit or monad. The name recognizes his contributions to gastrointestinal microbiology and bacterial taxonomy.[1][2]

Claveliimonas monacensis was formerly classified as Sellimonas monacensis. Analyses of its 16S rRNA gene and genome placed it apart from other species of Sellimonas and supported its transfer to Claveliimonas.[2]

Characteristics

Members of the genus ferment D-glucose, producing mainly acetate, lactate, and propionate, with smaller amounts of formate.[2]

Studied isolates of C. bilis grew at temperatures of 30–45 °C, with optimal growth at 37 °C, and at pH values of 4.5–7.0. Their cells occurred singly or in short chains.[2] The genomes contained a bile acid-inducible (bai) gene cluster involved in bile-acid 7α-dehydroxylation. Two isolates converted cholic acid to deoxycholic acid and 7-oxo-deoxycholic acid, whereas the type strain produced 7-oxo-deoxycholic acid with deoxycholic acid below the detection threshold.[2]

Ecology

Strains of C. bilis, including its type strain, were isolated from fecal samples obtained from healthy Japanese adults.[2] The type strain of C. monacensis was isolated from the cecal contents of a layer chicken sampled in Munich, Germany.[3]

Species

The genus contains two species with validly published and correct names:[1]
