Clear: Social Skincare
Clear is a skincare tracking and community mobile application founded in 2021 by Ahana Banerjee. The app allows users to log skincare routines, track symptoms, document skin changes over time, and interact with other users. It operates on a freemium model, with additional features available via subscription.[1]
History
Clear was developed in late 2020 by Ahana Banerjee while she was studying physics at Imperial College London.[2] The concept was based on Banerjee’s personal experience tracking skincare and managing cystic acne. After an initial proposal to startup accelerator Y Combinator was rejected, a revised version of the idea was accepted into the Y Combinator Winter 2021 cohort.[1]
Following the accelerator program, Banerjee left university to work on the project full time. Clear was incorporated in January 2021 and has since raised approximately US$1 million in early-stage funding.[3] As of 2025, the app has partnered with more than 3,000 skincare brands.[1]
Features
Clear’s core features include:
- Skincare routine logging
- Symptom tracking (e.g., dryness, oiliness, breakouts)
- Photo-based progress documentation
- Community interaction through posts, comments, and product reviews
The app contains a database of over 30,000 skincare products with ingredient information and purchasing links.[4] Users can make their routines public to share with the community, while personal logs remain private by default.
Privacy
Clear states that privacy is a central feature of the app, with progress photos kept private unless explicitly shared by the user. According to the company, it does not sell user data or share it with third parties without consent, and users can export or delete their data at any time.[5]
