Clio
Clio (short for Club of the Study of International Relations and International Organization) is the study association affiliated with the International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) programme at the University of Groningen. The association has approximately 1,000 to 1,100 members and is considered one of the larger study associations within the Faculty of Arts.[1][2]
History
Study association Clio was founded on 15 June 1988 as the study association for the programme Policy and Administration in International Organizations. At the time, the official Dutch name of the association was Club van de Studie Internationale Betrekkingen en Internationale Organisatie, from which the abbreviation Clio is derived.[3]
The name of the programme changed several times and was definitively established in 2007 as International Relations and International Organization (IRIO). From that point onwards, the programme was offered as a full bachelor’s degree. Due to increasing popularity, a numerus fixus was introduced in 2005, which was later raised to 300 students per year. The study also offers a full master's degree programme.[4]
Activities
Clio organises both educational and social activities for its members. Study-related activities include lectures, conferences, excursions, and an annual career day. In addition, the association organises international trips and the research project International Research for Students Platform (IRSP).
On a social level, Clio organises an introduction camp for first-year students, monthly social gatherings, and various association activities throughout the academic year. The association also publishes the magazine Checks & Balances, which addresses international and academic topics. Furthermore, an annual almanac and study materials, such as summaries, are made available to members.[5]
Organisation
Study association Clio has an organisational structure that is largely run by students. The association is governed by an executive board and supported by various committees and advisory bodies.
Board
The day-to-day management of Clio is carried out by a board that is appointed annually by the General Assembly. The board is responsible for association policy, financial management, external representation, and the coordination of committees and activities.[6]
The 38th board of Clio (2025–2026) consists of:
- Chair: Laila Badran
- Secretary: Sanne Korporaal
- Treasurer: Kaan Tu
- Commissioner of Public Relations: Esther Lainez
- Commissioner of External Affairs: Simon Zuijderwijk
- Commissioner of Internal Affairs: Eyla Wild
General Members Meeting
The General Members Meeting is the highest decision-making body of the association. All members have voting rights during these meetings. The General Members Meeting convenes several times per year and decides on matters such as the annual report, budget, and policy changes. It also supervises the functioning of the board.[7]
Committees
A large portion of Clio’s activities is organised by committees composed of active members of the association. There are over fifteen committees and they focus on areas such as educational activities, international travel, career events, publications, and social activities. Participation in committees allows members to gain organisational experience.[8]
Advisory Board
Clio has an Advisory Board that supports the executive board through solicited and unsolicited advice. This board generally consists of former board members and individuals with experience in the academic or institutional context of the programme. The Advisory Board has no executive authority and serves as a consultative body for the board.[9]
