Located in the thriving rural center of Cobram, Cobram Anglican Grammar School is a small, academically focused, independent school offering classes for students in Prep through to Year 12. The school is also part of the Anglican Schools Commission. Highly skilled staff provide an atmosphere at the School which combines every advantage of a small rural school with the expectations and academic outcomes of a much larger city school:

  • Small class sizes
  • Supportive family atmosphere
  • Affordable fees
  • Strong community involvement
  • Christian values

History[edit]

Christ the King Anglican College (CKC) opened in 2000 with a total of 26 students spread throughout Years 5, 6 and 7. The founding principal was Mr Andrew Williams who worked tirelessly to establish the school in the local community. Other founding members of staff were Mrs Tricia Seccull, Mrs Heather Stammers, Mrs Simone Tynan and Mrs Allyson Willis.

At the time of its opening, the College consisted of one building incorporating the Principal's office, library, staff room and two classrooms. The first Anglican College in the diocese, CKC was built through the generosity and vision of many in the local community. Bishop David Farrer was the first chairman of the College. Fr. Lyall Cowell was the driving force behind the school in its early years.

The Gearing Wing, a demount-able classroom block, was added to the College in the second half of 2001, greatly expanding the number of available classrooms. In April 2003, the old Library and Administration Building was opened, the first structure built in the school’s characteristic red brick style. In 2005 the first CKC students completed Year 12 and attained their Victorian Certificate of Education. In the same year a new Science Wing was constructed. In its seventeen year history, the College has grown steadily. In 2006 the first group of Prep students joined the school. Since then the primary school (Prep to year 4) has grown to include Seven composite classes. The College has become well known for addressing the academic and pastoral needs of its students through its developing primary and middle years programmes as well as engaging its senior students in a wide variety of VCE subjects.

In 2009 a new Arts Technology Wing was opened at the southern end of the College, The new facility has enabled the College to enrich its offerings in the Arts enormously. In the new Art building students have access to a modern, well equipped visual and ceramic arts classroom with its own kiln. The Administration Wing was renovated to provide a spacious, comfortable reception area, a student foyer, administrative offices and a new staff room.

During 2010 a new library building and Junior Primary classroom block were built in the North-West corner of the campus. The new facilities were opened in 2011 together with a new Senior Computer lab in the Gearing Wing and a new sports oval on the eastern side of the school, replacing the old orchard. 2012 saw the opening of more classroom facilities for Junior School students with two extra classrooms available for the use of students in Years One and Two, complete with breakout room, toilet and disabled facilities. These facilities were enhanced with the addition of an adventure playground.

In the latter half of 2012, the collage took a big step forward with the appointment of Mr Steve Gale as the new principal, replacing the outgoing and will be sadly missed Mr Michael Merrylees. Under Mr Steve Gales, influence 2013 saw the introductions of woodwork and music classes to the secondary curriculum and the start of the roll out of the collage wide Wi-Fi Network for both staff and students. More classrooms were added in 2014 in response to steadily increasing students numbers. These included classrooms for year Three and Year Four students, as well as a dedicated Food Technology room. Again in 2015 increasing numbers demanded the establishment of more classrooms. These facilities included a staff area for middle and senior school staff members and more classrooms for our growing middle school population.

As of the 1st of January 2015 the school became apart of the Anglican Schools Commission (Inc.) and is now trading as Cobram Anglican Grammar School (CAGS). The Anglican Schools Commission encompasses 14 schools across Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. 2016 saw the establishment of a cover for our Basketball Court and an area which in time will be developed into a gymnasium. As well as a large amount of new paving around the senior and middle school to tie in to the new gardens around the school.

2017 has seen the installations of a new sand pit for the junior school and a giant chess board to encourage more students to join the schools already extremely successful chess team.

The 2017/2018 school holiday period will see the new Performing Arts Center be built in the space currently between the Science building, Admin building and the Arts Technology Wing in the South-West corner of the campus. The new Performing Arts Centre will be surrounded by landscaping that will include new trees, gardens shade sails and small grassy hills or mounds to provide students with a relaxing outdoor area to enjoy recess and lunch time. The Performing Arts Center as you can see from the photos (above and below) it is already well under constructions and will be ready for the start of 2018. At the same time, the Arts Technology Wing will be extended towards the schools Western boundary and will include a purpose built Wood Work and Sheet Metal rooms. The schools new STEM Lab (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), a demount-able classroom block, will also be constructed during the 2017/2018 school holiday period and will be located between the Gearing Wing and the Oval, and again will be surrounded by landscaping that will include new gardens and shade sails. Both projects are planed to be ready in the early part of 2018.

With the school growing fast two new demount-able classrooms are also under constructions is the Junior School, these will be located between the covered basketball court and the schools northern boundary and will face inwards towards the Adventure playground.

The school is an exciting place to be, as we continue to implement our School Improvement Plan, and our building master-plan.

School Philosophy[edit]

Cobram Anglican Grammar School is an affordable school, open to all, providing a caring, Anglican and disciplined learning environment

Our motto is Integrity, Endeavour, Community:

  • Integrity: always be honest and true in all dealings with one another.
  • Endeavour: always be prepared to do one’s best, no matter what the obstacles.
  • Community: always be supportive of one another, and recognize the intrinsic value of the contribution of every individual.

Cobram AGS has clear, calmly communicated expectations of academic achievement and behavior. We aim for excellence in all that we do, particularly in the way that we treat each other. Cobram AGS is also a safe, caring and nurturing faith based educational environment, where individuals are encouraged to grow through a broad range of academic and practical programmes. The opportunities we offer are designed to stimulate the emotional, intellectual, physical, creative, social, spiritual and personal dimensions of our students.

Academic rigour and the love of learning, together with the care and welfare of students, are equally regarded. It is through the respect for this environment that students build strong, respectful relationships with both their peers and teachers. They grow in confidence and they also learn skills to prepare them for the triumphs and challenges that they will be required to deal with as they grow into adulthood.

Cobram Grammar offers a broad range of curriculum experiences, providing increasing subject choice as the student’s progress through their schooling. We pride ourselves on our innovative teaching approaches which not only develop thinking and learning skills, but also build personal intellectual capabilities that provide the scaffolding for life-long learning.

Our School provides a learning environment that is increasingly Information Technology rich, and encourages students to be both consumers and creators of content and present evidence of their learning in a variety of ways. The values of integrity of the individual, personal endeavour, and active community participation are at the very core of our ethos and provide the foundation for all curriculum experiences.

It is my belief that Cobram Anglican Grammar School is the right choice for students and families seeking innovative, challenging and engaging educational experiences with a strong focus on academic excellence, in a traditional Anglican Grammar School environment, in all year levels from the Preparatory year to VCE.
