From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Christopher Paul Burke (born May 30, 1995), better known by his stage name Cold California, is a Scottish record producer. Burke produces a variety of styles within the pop and rock genres and sometimes other forms of music.

Early life[edit]

Christopher Paul Burke was born on May 30, 1995 in Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of Margaret Teresa (née McNamara), a nurse, and Martin Burke, an engineer. He is of Scottish and Irish descent.

Raised in Aberdeen, Burke was educated at St. Joseph's RC Primary and Robert Gordon's College. At the age of 11, Burke began learning to play guitar after discovering the music of Nirvana, and immediately started writing songs.

The first concert Burke attended was Foo Fighters on November 10th 2007 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre with his father. The same venue where he would also watch British rock band Snow Patrol and Blink-182 in his teenage years.

Being a fan of skateboarding from age 12 to 16, Burke cites the influence that the skateboard culture had on his music taste, introducing him to a variety of artists ranging from Mötley Crüe to John Mayer.

Career[edit]

In the winter of 2013, Burke decided to start a band under the name Cold California, in reference to the opening lyric of American pop-punk band New Found Glory's 2006 single "It's Not Your Fault". With no friends who could play musical instruments, he took to the website Gumtree to post an advert looking for local musicians in the Aberdeen area to join the band. The advert read: "Looking for members to join a band influenced by artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Biffy Clyro, Foo Fighters and Lifehouse". The first three musicians who responded to the advert would make up the band for the next 3 years, as they wrote, performed and released original material under the name Cold California. In 2016, frustrated by the lack of creativity that he could input, Burke slowly decided to pull away from the other band members and began writing and recording his own private demos. Shortly after the release of the single “Hurricane”.[1] featuring Burke on vocals/guitar, the 4 members mutually parted ways.

Still motivated to write and produce music under the Cold California name, Burke continued creating private demos, that would eventually go on to become his debut EP, A Sign of the Times[2]. A departure from his previous work, this time he took on the role of producer and hired Italian vocalist Violetta Gaetani for the project. His first work using session musicians. A Sign of the Times was met with a positive response and received radio airplay by Scottish broadcaster Jim Gellatly on Amazing Radio.

Encouraged with the reception of his first solo EP, Burke was finally confident in his songwriting and producing abilities. In December of that year, would come the release of the pop influenced Dear Diary[3] EP, this time featuring American Lindsay Willinger on vocals. The sophomore effort received positive reviews upon release and would also receive radio airplay from Jim Gellatly on the day of it’s release.

2018, would see the release of the alternative rock EP, A World Away[4], combining Burke's pop sensibility with rock influence. The 4 song EP included vocals by American vocalist Joseph Hunter Duncan[5].

Personal life[edit]

Burke is an avid fan of Aberdeen Football Club, and has held a season ticket at the club since 2003.

"The Frame" by Manchester rock band Oceansize from their 2007 album Frames is Burke's favorite song.

With a collection of guitars, Burke's favorite is his unique 2010 Charcoal Frost Metallic Fender Stratocaster that is fitted with 2 P-90 pickups[6]

In 2013, Burke received his Queens Badge, the highest honor possible[7], from the Boys' Brigade.

Burke graduated from NESCOL with an HND in Mechanical Engineering in 2015.

Between 2015 and 2016, Burke was part of post-rock project Tenaya with former bandmate David Chappell.

He still does not know how to read sheet music and writes his music only by ear.
