Coleman Cruz Hughes (born 1996) is an American writer on issues of race in the United States, a columnist at Quillette, and a student in the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University. He is of African American[1] and Puerto Rican descent. Sam Harris has described him as "brave, eloquent, restrained."[2] He has been featured on the Heterodox Academy blog[3] and published in The New York Times[4] and the Columbia Daily Spectator.[5] He has been interviewed by Glenn Loury,[6] Sam Harris,[7] and Dave Rubin.[8]

Hughes objects to the politics of the far right and far left. He focuses on the importance of people taking responsibility to overcome whatever adversity they face. He charges that the dominant social justice discourse focuses on the agency of those of European descent, while ignoring the agency of those of African descent.[9] He is concerned about a racial double standard with the potential to lead to social injustice.[10] He describes his vision as "humanist," as opposed to "anti-racist."[11] He also argues against reparations for slavery and affirmative action as effective ways to empower African Americans.[12] On June 19, 2019, Hughes testified before a U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee at a hearing on reparations for slavery, arguing against the campaign.[13][14]
