Colin Barrow

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Colin Barrow is a Glasgow-born business consultant and prolific author with a specific interest in start-up companies. He was Head of the Enterprise Group at Cranfield School of Management for a decade and has been a visiting professor in universities in the US, Europe and the Far East. His early books, The Small Business Guide (BBC 1982), written to accompany the five part BBC TV series the Business Club[1] and the Pocket Entrepreneur (Economist Publications 1987)[2] broke new ground in popularising the subject of entrepreneurship in the United Kingdom. The former book attracted critical media acclaim including, "Would-be entrepreneurs and their advisors will find fewer better investments than this publication," Financial Times. [3] [4][5]

Education[edit]

Barrow attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst following briefly in his father and grandfathers footsteps. A spell in business inspired him to pursue an MBA at Cranfield School of Management.

Embarking on a new writing topic, and in some ways rounding the circle, Barrow attended the first year of the War Studies MA at Kings College London in 2013/4, transferring to the University of Buckingham as an Associate Student on their MA Military History programme in 2014/15.

Professional Achievements[edit]

Barrow was a consultant on Microsoft’s project to incorporate a business plan writer into Office 2000. He also led the team that launched the Business Growth Programme at Cranfield, the UK’s longest running and most successful programme for the development of owner-managers. It has been running for 25 years and has helped over 1,500 owner managers achieve their business and personal ambitions. Distinguished entrepreneurs who have been through Cranfield’s programmes include Karan Bilimoria , founder of Cobra Beer, Nick Jenkins founder of Moonpig and Lara Morgan founder of Pacific Direct. Barrow was also instrumental in appointing Mary Creagh, a shadow cabinet member and contender for leadership of the British Labour party to his team at Cranfield, publishing conference papers and a journal article with her.

Believing that, 'teachers have at least as much to learn from students as they have to impart,' has been the enduring source of inspiration for his writing. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

The Business Plan Workbook: A Practical Guide to New Venture Creation and Development, (2015), by Colin Barrow, Paul Barrow, Robert Brown. Kogan Page [11]

One of the most important steps in launching a new venture or expanding an existing one is the creation of a business plan. Studies and real-life examples reveal that the absence of a written business plan leads to a higher incidence of failure for new businesses, and inhibits growth and development. Based on methodology developed at Cranfield School of Management, this book takes a practical approach to the topic of business planning for new venture creation and development. It includes a range of topics that stretch from how to create a competitive business strategy through to forecasting sales volume and value. It also looks at how to validate business ideas, brand a business, research and segment markets and raise finance.
