Collabs is the eighth extended play (EP) by American singer Halsey, released on July 31, 2020 by Capitol Records. It was released with no prior announcement and features six songs Halsey had previously released that were collaborations with other artists. Some of the songs are included on her third studio album Manic (2020) while others were originally non-album releases. The EP features collaborations with recording artists Juice Wrld, Dominic Fike, Suga, Alanis Morissette, and Marshmello.[1]
Background[edit]
On July 30, 2020 a fan pointed out on Twitter that a random extended play had appeared under the "Compilations" section on Halsey's Spotify profile under the release date of January 15, 2020. This caused speculation and prompted a response from Halsey herself. She claimed it was something the record label did, and that she herself did not really know it was going to happen.[2] The EP was released to other streaming platforms on July 31, 2020.[3]
Songs[edit]
All of the songs on the EP are collaborations between Halsey and other artists.
The first three tracks on Collabs are the three interludes from Halsey's album Manic, which was released on January 17, 2020. The first song on the EP is "Dominic's Interlude" with American singer Dominic Fike, which was given a mini music video used during the Manic World Tour between Halsey's performances of "Forever ... (Is a Long Time)" and "I Hate Everybody". The second track is "Suga's Interlude" with South Korean rapper Suga of boy band BTS, which was originally released as a promotional single from Manic on December 6, 2019, alongside "Finally // Beautiful Stranger", which is not included on the EP.[4][5][6] The third song is "Alanis' Interlude" with Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette, a bisexual anthem about sexual freedom.
Collabs features two appearances from late American rapper Juice Wrld. The first is his feature on the remix of "Without Me", which was originally the lead single from Manic. Halsey said she asked Juice Wrld to do a remix because he inspired the "vibe" of the original song.[7] The EP also includes Juice Wrld and Halsey's collaboration "Life's a Mess", which was released on July 6, 2020, as the third single from Juice Wrld's posthumous third studio album, Legends Never Die (2020).[8] The song peaked at numbers 8, 9, and 11 in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom respectively, and also charted in 16 other countries. The official song visualizer, directed by Chad Ross, was released alongside the song and features artist David Garibaldi painting a picture of Juice Wrld and Halsey together.[9]
The final track on the EP is "Be Kind", a single released on May 1, 2020, with American producer Marshmello.[10] The song is an "emotional" EDM track[11] song that describes trust issues in romantic relationships.[12] The song peaked in the top 20 in 8 different countries and the top 40 in many more. The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, was released nearly two months later on July 28, 2020 and currently has over 33 million views.[13]
