The College of Health Sciences, a union of the various departments within the University of Ghana responsible for training medical practitioners and health professionals, was established by the University of Ghana Council on December 11, 1999. The College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana comprises the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing And Midwifery, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, Univesity of Ghana Dental School, University of Ghana Medical School and the Noguchi Memorial Institute For Medical Research. In 1997, the Academic Board of the University endorsed proposals from the University of Ghana Medical School to bring together the then University of Ghana Medicine School, University of Ghana School of Dentistry, the School of Public Health, Noguchi Memorial Institute For Medical Research, the School of Allied Health Sciences, now School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences(SBAHS), and the School of Nursing as a College of Medical Sciences.

School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences[edit]

The School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences within the College of Health Sciences, in the University of Ghana has locations at the main University campus in Legon, and the Korle Bu campus. The School provides a high standard of training, mentoring and research to produce excellent health professionals. The following departments are under the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences:

The mission of the School of Nursing and Midwifery is to develop well-educated and competent nurses who will provide quality service to individuals, families and communities, and generate nursing knowledge through research to improve nursing practice. University of Ghana Medical School[edit]

The University of Ghana Medical School is a clinical school in contrast to the former which included Basic and Para Clinical Sciences. It offers three programmes, namely the Traditional Medical Programme, Graduate Entry Medical Program (GEMP) and the Dental Programme. Plans are far advanced to introduce a Graduate Entry Dental Programme (GED). The Medical School consist of the following:

School of Pharmacy[edit]

The mission of the UG School of Pharmacy is to develop world class pharmacy graduates with capabilities and competencies to meet the national pharmaceutical challenges and patient care needs. It consist of:

The mission of the School of Public Health is to train public health practitioners who will be leaders and change agents for health development in Ghana in particular and in the wider African context. The School of Public Health is also made up of:

  • Biological, Environmental and Occupational Health
  • Health Policy, Planning and Management
  • Population, Family and Reproductive Health

Research[edit]

Noguchi Memorial Institute For Medical Research[edit]

The Noguchi Memorial Institute For Medical Research (NMIMR) is the leading biomedical research facility in Ghana. The Institute is the result of joint efforts by Prof. E. O. Easmon, former Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, Prof. Kenji Honda of Fukushima Medical School in Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It was built by the Government of Japan and donated to the Government and people of Ghana in honour of the distinguished Japanese researcher Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, who researched into yellow fever in Ghana and died from the disease in the country in 1928.
