The Collegium Augustinianum is a research institute and ecumenical graduate school of philosophy and theology in the Catholic, Augustinian tradition. The Collegium Augustinianum research institute in Philadelphia,[where? ] Pennsylvania, was established in 2006 and offers library privileges to a special collection of ancient and medieval manuscripts available for residential fellows, students and visiting scholars. The Collegium Augustinianum Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology was founded in 2012 in Orlando, Florida, as an independent ecumenical institution.[1] The administration and faculty represent a diversity of Christian traditions, including Episcopalians, Roman Catholics, Orthodox and Evangelicals. The Collegium Augustinianum is dedicated to the thought of Augustine, the Augustinian tradition and Augustine's influence on medieval, modern and contemporary thinkers, especially on existentialism and phenomenology.
Foundation and intellectual heritage[edit]
Inspired by the mid-nineteenth century scholarly legacy of Mgr. Henri-Nicolas-Sylvestre Guillon, Père Armand-Benjamin Caillau and Père Jacques Paul Migne, the Collegium Augustinianum was founded in Paris in 1999. An affiliated institute was established in Rome in 2000, which moved to Philadelphia in 2006.[clarify]
In 2012, the Collegium Augustinianum Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology was established in Orlando, Florida. It was incorporated in Florida. Dedicated to the study of Augustine and his influence on Western philosophy and theology, and especially on medieval thought and on existentialism and phenomenology, the Collegium Augustinianum is governed by a college of fellows. The Institute for Medieval Studies[where? ] offers a special Ph.D. program in Medieval Christian palaeography for students who have a serious interest in medieval manuscripts.[2] The Center for Nouvelle Théologie[where? ] is dedicated to the thought of those theologians grounded in the Continental ressourcement movement, including Henri de Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Yves Congar, Karl Rahner, and Hans Küng. The Institute for Augustinian Phenomenology is dedicated to the intellectual tradition of Christian Existential phenomenology, especially the work of Wilhelmus Luijpen, O.S.A., Gabriel Marcel, Tarcisius Van Bavel, O.S.A. and John Macquarrie.
Fellows[edit]
The Collegium Augustinianum is governed by an international college of fellows. The college was founded on the idea of collegiality and that the fellows and faculty essentially constitute the college.[clarification needed (see talk)] Visiting faculty from Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Rome and other universities are contracted by the college as supervisors and guest readers for theses and doctoral dissertatons. The graduate school confers non-residential, research degrees to an international student body.[6][clarify] Theses and dissertations are accepted in English, French, Italian, German and Dutch with the approval of the supervising professor and the dean. The Collegium Augustinianum offers S.Th.D., Ph.D., S.Th.M., Ph.M. and Ph.B. degrees in philosophy, theology, Christian humanities and Medieval Christian palaeography. Students may also specialize in the history of philosophy, patristic theology, historical theology, medieval philosophy and theology or Augustinian phenomenology.
Research and publications[edit]
The fellows and faculty of the Collegium Augustinianum represent some of the most important scholars today in the fields of philosophy and theology, especially concerning Augustine, Medieval Augustinianism and Augustine's influence on existentialism and phenomenology.[7][8] The Collegium Augustinianum also offers visiting fellowships for scholars and graduate students.
