Collins E. Onuegbu (born June 30, 1965) is a Nigerian Technology entrepreneur and investor who founded Signal Alliance in 1996. After graduating from University of Nigeria (Nsukka),[1] he worked in several managerial and executive roles in other IT companies before establishing his company.

He served as the MD/CEO of Signal Alliance before transferring to the role of Executive Vice Chairman of the company in 2014. Collins is also the founder of Sasware which serves as a subsidiary to Signal Alliance. He has over two decade years of experience in the IT sector. His years of experience has helped to transform Signal Alliance into becoming one of Nigeria’s top IT firms.

Collins is an Alumnus of Lagos Business school and Harvard Business School (OPM). He is also a member of Institute of Directors(Nigeria), Nigeria Computer Society. He is a member of the Executive committee of Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria.

Collins has helped to build start-up businesses in Nigeria as an angel investor. He is also a Director of Lagos Angel Network.[2]

Life As An Angel Investor[edit]

Collins Onuegbu serves as a Director of Lagos Angel Network (LAN) an association of Angel Investors in Nigeria. LAN has invested early seed funding in ten companies since launching in 2014. Considered Nigeria’s first startup incubator, over 50 startups have made Co-Creation Hub their home. To mark their fifth anniversary, the incubator announced a $5 million social innovation fund. The fund will offer support for early stage social enterprises solving local problems across various sectors of the Nigerian economy.[3] [4]

Angel investors are often executives, who may be interested in angel investing for reasons that go beyond pure monetary return. These include wanting to keep abreast of current developments in a particular business arena, mentoring another generation of entrepreneurs, and making use of their experience and networks on a less than full-time basis. Thus, in addition to funds, angel investors can often provide valuable management advice and important contacts. Because there are no public exchanges listing their securities, private companies meet angel investors in several ways, including referrals from the investors' trusted sources and other business contacts; at investor conferences and symposia; and at meetings organized by groups of angels where companies pitch directly to investor in face-to-face meetings.[5]

As an investment vehicle, in 2016 Lagos StartUp DealDay raised over N100 million from LAN members and the early stage investment community through which it invested in some of the fastest growing start-ups in Nigeria including Cafè Neo and Big Cabal Media.[6] [7]

Earlier in 2016, LAN announced that they were going to raise ₦100 million for Lagos-based startups in 2016. Using Deal Day as a focal point, LAN expect to energize investments in Lagos startups by raising the aforementioned amount from its members, the investment community at large (angel investors and Lagos startup ecosystem players) and, through a pitch competition, funding startups and ventures with the best idea.[8] [9]

Philantropic Interests[edit]

Collins Onuegbu serves as a Member of Advisory Board of Social Media Week, Lagos [10]. He is also a mentor at the General Electric Lagos Garage [11].

Awards and recognition[edit]

In 2013, he was awarded Ernest & Young Entrepreneur of The Year [12] [13]. In 2014, he was nominated IT Personality of the year by the Nigeria Computer Society [14] [15]
