Color Biolab
Color Biolab, also known as Laboratorium, is a transdisciplinary research laboratory.
History
Color Biolab was established in 2016 by biologist Maria Boto Ordóñez and shoe designer Kristel Peters. Part of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium, the transdisciplinary research laboratory initially focused on experimenting with new color creation methods. [1] Its creation positioned KASK as one of the first artistic educational institutions in Belgium embracing scientific research in its educational program. A core principle of the research lab was identifying common ground among KASK departments, which centered on color. The Color Biolab contextualizes color within the contemporary art and design world, studying related environmental issues.
Members
Maria Boto Ordóñez holds a degree in food technology from the University of León, and a Ph.D. from the University of Barcelona. She was previously affiliated with the Waag Society in Amsterdam, collaborating with artists and designers on bioart and biodesign projects.[2]
Kristel Peters is a shoe designer exploring sustainable shoe design and circular economy models. She is particularly interested in identifying new, low-environmental-impact materials.
In 2020, Peters left Color Biolab. Heleen Sintobin, a furniture designer with a background in interior architecture, succeeded her. Sintobin graduated from the Royal College of Art in London. Her work highlights the power of materials in a contemporary design context.
Operation
The Color Biolab fosters hands-on research and reflection on color theory and properties. Research encompasses growing mushrooms that change the wood they grow on, and studying the cultivation of microalgae in industrial wastewater as a potential source of color pigments.[3] The lab approaches color from sustainable production and application, and as a common language between art and science.
