Columbus (population 905,748) is the capital and largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio. Named after Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, it is located on the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, near the geographic center of Ohio. It is the 14th-largest city in the United States, the second-largest city in the Midwest after Chicago, and the third-largest state capital.
Columbus' economy is primarily centered on state government, as well as The Ohio State University, one of the largest universities in the United States. Because of this, Columbus has experienced more economic stability than many other cities in the Midwest. Six Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Columbus: Cardinal Health, American Electric Power, L Brands, Nationwide, Alliance Data, and Huntington Bancshares.
